97 vocational stream students chosen as apprentices

The Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region), Chennai, an autonomous body of Ministry of Human Resource Development, interviewed Plus Two students in vocational stream at Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Srirangam, on Saturday for inducting them as Technician Apprentices.

Students now in Plus Two as also those who had completed their higher secondary in vocational stream from 2010 to 2012 took part in the certificate verification process carried out by officials of the board in the presence of Chief Educational Officer K.Selvakumar and other senior officials of school education department.

307 students

According to official sources, 307 students took part. Of them, 97 were chosen by participating industries and banks. This exercise of the board was first of its kind to create awareness that vocational certificate holders in Plus Two are eligible to join as industrial apprentices.

The board will issue a Government of India Certificate to the candidates completing their one-year training under the scheme. Industries deem it as a year of experience.

Statutory obligation

Under the Apprentices Act, it is mandatory for all organisations to notify the strength of apprentices every year as a statutory obligation. Ashok Leyland Limited; Indian Overseas Bank; Brakes India Ltd.; all Central, Town and Urban Cooperative Banks; BHEL, Tiruchi; BHEL, Ranipet; and Canara Bank offer training for higher secondary (vocational) candidates with stipends ranging from Rs.1,970 to Rs.7,000 per month. Industries are unable to get the required number of higher secondary (vocational) passed candidates for training.

Earlier in the day, Assistant Director, Board of Apprenticeship Training, Southern Region, Kiruba Shankar, briefed vocational stream teachers on the significance of apprenticeship training for students at a young age.

Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region), Chennai, an autonomous body of Ministry of Human Resource Development, will interview Plus Two qualified students in vocational stream at Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Srirangam, on February 16 for inducting them as Technician Apprentices in 20 industries that have offered 1,000 openings.

Students from the central districts who had completed their higher secondary in vocational stream from 2010 to 2012 can attend the interview, A. Ayyakannu, Director, Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region), Chennai, informed mediapersons on Friday.

Not many were aware that vocational certificate holders in Plus Two are eligible to join as Technician (Vocational) Apprentice entitling each to a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,970. Industries even pay higher stipend on their own volition, he said.

The Board will issue a Government of India Certificate to the candidates completing their one-year training under the scheme.

The one-year duration of apprenticeship will be factored in for employment under Central/ State government establishments. Out of the four Southern States and the union territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep in the jurisdiction of the Board’s Southern Region, the awareness on Technical (Vocational) Apprentice was the highest in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Ayyakannu said.

As for Tamil Nadu, 75,000 students Plus Two vocational stream students pass out every year, and the target is to enrol at least 30 per cent of students in the bottomline at the levels of higher secondary, polytechnic and graduation.

The stipend amounts are Rs. 3,560 for graduate apprentice (engineering graduate), Rs. 2,530 for graduate apprentice – Sandwich (sandwich course student of engineering college) and technician apprentice (diploma holder in engineering), and Rs. 2070 for technical apprentice – sandwich (sandwich course student of polytechnic college).

Sixty per cent of the 1.63 lakh candidates who had undergone one-year training under the scheme in the southern region during the 11{+t}{+h}plan period have secured permanent jobs in industries where they underwent apprenticeship, Mr. Ayyakannu said.

In Tiruchi district, about 8,600 out of the present batch 29,776 Plus Two students are enrolled in vocational stream, Chief Educational Officer K. Selvakumar who was also present said.

Under apprentices Act, it is mandatory for all organisations to notify the strength of apprentices every year as a statutory obligation. In Tamil Nadu, Ashok Leyland Limited; Indian Overseas Bank; Brakes India Ltd.; all Central, Town and Urban Cooperative Banks; BHEL, Tiruchi; BHEL, Ranipet; and Canara Bank offer training for higher secondary (vocational) candidates with stipends ranging from Rs. 1,970 to Rs. 7,000 per month. Industries, according to Mr. Ayyakannu, are unable to get the required number of higher secondary (vocational) passed candidates for training.

Presently, the Board’s Southern Region has notified 391 industries to engage these candidates, Mr. Ayyakannu said.
