Secrets add value to a film, says Hollywood VFX man

Quote:
It is the secrets which make the screenplay of a film more interesting, adding up to its popularity, said Michael Karp - the visual effects man from Hollywood.

Karp is the man behind some of the awe-inspiring visual effects in Hollywood films like Titanic, X-Men series and Terminator. He interacted with students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy as part of the 43 edition of Festember 2017 on Friday.

The guest lecture series of Festember - 2017 'Carpe Diem', began with him where he gave a bird's eye view on the technicalities involved in visual effects and shared his experiences in working on Hollywood blockbusters.

Speaking about what an ideal film should essentially contain, he said that a movie should make the audience cry. But it is the secrets of the movie that help the film have a greater impact on the audience, he added.

Discussing some of the secrets, Karp who headed the visual effects for Titanic which released in 1997, said that the movie does not speak about the whereabouts of Jack, the lead character of the film after the ship sinks. Similarly, till date no one knows about the whereabouts of the diamond in reality, which was shown in the film, he added.

Mentioning that 'epiphany' adds value to a film, he spoke about's its reference in the famous Bollywood movie '3 idiots', where the lead character played by Amir Khan realises his professor to be intelligent than him in the last scene as he explains the usage of graphite pencil by astronauts.

The first day of the four-day cultural extravaganza also had a variety of Tamil events ranging from Sakkalakala Vallavan and Villipaattu, which brought many traditional enthusiasts to the fore, to impromptu events such as Kuraloviyum and Varthai Velayatu, in which participants were tested for their flair in the Tamil language.

The wall painting competition conducted by the Fine Arts Club of NIT Trichy had participants sketch a rough drawing with the Festember theme. Only 6 teams moved to the finals from the 20 teams which participated.
The Huishou Challenge, based primarily on junk arts, tested the creativity of participants as they used the limited resources provided to them to create art.
