SpiceJet mulls domestic capacity expansion

New Delhi: Low-cost carrier, SpiceJet, which has around 12% market share, is looking at expanding its capacity in the domestic market even as it is awaiting permission to fly on international routes from the civil aviation ministry. Samyukth Sridharan, chief commercial officer, SpiceJet said that the company will get delivery of four new aircraft by end of this year and three new planes by next year. “We are looking at adding more frequency in the routes already operated by us,” he said.

On the horizon could be busy sectors connecting major metros and mini-metros of the country like New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. This is on back of recovery in the airline passengers, which recorded a jump of around 23% in January 2010 compared to the same period year ago. Sridharan added that the airline could also look at tapping into Tier II and Tier III cities, which are still not serviced by it. Though he said that the airline has identified gaps, Sridharan refused to indicate the cities where SpiceJet could start operations.

With the recovery in airline traffic, the company had recorded a profit of Rs 105 crore in quarter ending December 2009 compared to a net loss in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Talking about the airline’s international expansion plans, Sridharan said that the company is expecting to get the go-ahead from DGCA in a month and a half. “We will possibly start our international operations in 2010,” he said.

Kalanithi Maran eyes SpiceJet pie

Bangalore: Budget airline SpiceJet Ltd, which is scouting for investors to raise $50-75 million for expansion, is in talks with media baron Kalanithi Maran to offload stake, two persons familiar with the development said.
Company sources who did not want to be named said the promoter of Sun Network, South India’s biggest broadcaster, is considering investing close to $100 million in the New Delhi-based airline.
Edelweiss Capital is advising Maran on the deal, sources said.
“The talks (between SpiceJet and Maran) began last week. Kalanithi is looking at picking up stake in the airline and may buy the stake sold by Istithmar to mutual funds and financial institutions. Another option being looked at is the issue of fresh equity. The contours of the deal have not yet been finalised,” said one of the source.
In the first week of February, the beleaguered Dubai government’s private equity arm Istithmar sold off its 13.4% stake in SpiceJet.
Sanjay Aggarwal, chief executive officer of SpiceJet, could not be contacted for a comment.
But the airline’s spokesperson said; “We do not comment on speculations and rumours.”
Maran has been eyeing the aviation space for some time now. Few months back, there were speculations the company was looking at acquiring the yet-to-be-launched Star Aviation, which is promoted by Dubai-based real estate ETA Star Group.

It's not going to happen after May-10 as Air Asia going to start their direct flight from Bangalore to KL.

Bonanza of low airfares to southeast Asia

Air Asia, the Malaysia-based low-cost carrier that runs services to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from Tiruchi, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, has kicked off an aggressive marketing campaign in the city to familiarise residents about the airline, its services and fares.

"Air Asia is not planning to start services from Chennai because services from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram were launched recently. The marketing drive is aimed at encouraging Chennaiites to travel to Tiruchi or Kochi to fly with us to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. We see lots of travellers coming to Tiruchi to board Air Asia flights as fares are cheaper," said a spokesperson of the airline.

This is really a good move by Air Asia

I am not sure it is going to be good for Trichy traffic. Currently, if Chennai and Bengalore peoples are travel to Trichy to take Air Asia fligt is true, then Trichy airport will lose those passengers after they start direct service from Chennai and Bengalore. They already planned to start the service from both Chennai and Benagalore from May-2010.

Its really good move by Air Asia for the benefit of passengers from Chennai and Bangalore; but not for Trichy :? .

Thanks. But Air Asia seems to offer a low fare. Does any one know how to book a ticket from BKK to TRZ in AIr Asia's web site. Their site does not allow me to book to TRZ from BKK. Do I have to book two tickets one for BKK-KUL and another for KUL-TRZ? Has any one flew this route before?

You need to book two separate tickets for you itinerary.

TRZ-KUL (you can book in INR)
KUL-BKK (you should book in MYR)
