Butterfly park abuzz

The Butterfly Conservatory an Park at Srirangam is now full of butterflies, thanks to the salubrious weather.— PHOTO: M. SRINATH

Quote:
A large number of butterflies had been swarming around the Butterfly Conservatory near Srirangam, attracting children and nature lovers.

The butterflies shift to safer places and hide themselves during the sharp showers, but come out during the lull, says N. Satheesh, Divisional Forest Officer, said that the species mainly included ‘Blue tiger’, ‘yellow tip’, “plain tiger”, “common crow”, and “grass yellow”. He said the arrivals of butterflies at the conservatory would register a steady growth once there was a let up in showers.

The planting of a large number of butter-fly friendly plants all around the conservatory had been a favourable factor for attracting the butterflies. The plants included Plumbago, Desert Petunia, Desert Rose, Dwarf White, Ixora Pink, Zinnia Zinnia, Ylang Ylang, and Pinwheel flower.

There is bus service to Melur---but limited

You can reach by Road in 2 ways, either through Melur on Cauvery Banks or through Kollidam Karai( the road which extends from Yatri Nivas)

Many Proposals have gone to TNSTC from those who visited the park to increase the frequency of buses and the officials have replied positively----But it will take time--some 1 to 2 months

The Entrance fees is Rs 20

Refreshment stall---Drinking taps available---not sure about other stalls

Best time to visit ----after the rains stop and Mild Sunshine

Mostly many people are visiting from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 3.30 PM to 6.30 PM---Park is opened from 10 to 6-----But, exit time, gets extended to 6.30 PM

Take some hi-fi camera if you camera---Enjoy the Trip :)

Established at a cost of Rs. 8.5 crore, the conservatory aims to foster conservation of butterfly species. Chief Minister inaugurated it.

The lush green tropical butterfly conservatory established at Srirangam by the Forest Department has been thrown open to visitors. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated the butterfly conservatory through video conference in Chennai on Friday.

Set up on a sprawling area of 25 acres in the reserve forest area in Upper Anicut, the butterfly conservatory housing multiple species of butterflies is sand-witched between the Cauvery and the Coleroon river.

Established at a cost of Rs. 8.5 crore, the conservatory aims to foster conservation of butterfly species and educate public regarding the role of butterflies in maintaining ecological balance. It will house 40 species of butterflies including crimson rose, common mormon, lime butterfly, pansy, blue tiger, common jezebel and striped tiger. Forest Department authorities here said the conservatory will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The conservatory would remain closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.

It contains an outdoor conservatory with floral patches, indoor conservatory, a breeding lab, interpretation centre, active and passive humidifiers besides children’s play corner.

Butterfly park opened in Trichy

Considered to be the biggest butterfly park in south India, the butterfly park at the Trichy that was constructed at a cost of Rs 8 crores was finally inaugurated three days ago in a hush hush manner from Chennai. The forest authorities were themselves unaware of any such development until the AIADMK party owned Channels began flashing of its launch today. As confusion was prevailing over its inauguration, the politicos from the district took a tour of the butterfly park this morning amidst heavy rain by calling in a few forest officials.

The impressive butterfly park boasts of a Nakshatra Vanam containing trees that are related to the zodiac signs and stars of Indian astrology. Built up at a total cost of 8.67 crores in a total land area of 25 hectares by the forest department will see at least 39 local species of butterflies that would be reared in the park. The indoor conservatories will be having Air conditioners and green houses for the butterflies to reproduce in a suitable manner. At least two or three have been planned inside the 25 hectares compound where a total of 10 acres is been ready and is already being visited by passers-by. A pet project of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalithaa launched in early 2013. A large number of nectar plants and host plants were raised in the park by the forest authorities.

However, on Sunday amidst the heavy rain when the district itself was under water, the politicos along with the media men of the party took to the butterfly park and toured to the park and distributed sweets to the public to imply that the park has been opened for public.

Forest officials attached to the district forest division said that the park after completing works was waiting for inauguration and it was during the month of April that the works were completed but constant requests and appeals to the government went unheard until it was opened without any intimation to the forest officials. The revenue officials from Trichy also were unaware about the inauguration.

The forest officials who were surprised about the inauguration never came to know until they were informed by their superiors in Chennai about its inauguration today, which was done three days ago by the Chief Minister J Jayalalitha through video conferencing in Chennai. Top officials from the district forest office were never able to make it to the inauguration except for a few such as the Assistant Conservator of Forests and the forest ranger.
