Fire engulfs building on prominent Trichy road

TRICHY: A major fire broke out at a four-storey building on the arterial Sastri Road in Thennur area here on Friday afternoon. There were no casualties, but the firefighters had to struggle for more than three hours to put out the fire. Fifteen 15 truckloads of water and five fire-tenders were deployed.

The fire initially broke out from the third floor of the Triveni building where the marketing division of the Indian Oil Corporation is situated. The third floor is occupied by the company's Indane gas division, and the first and second floors have offices of Dhanlaxmi Bank and Axis bank respectively.

The exact cause of the fire is not known, though electric short circuit is suspected. "We are not discounting the theory of a short circuit, but we are studying further about the possible cause of fire," said divisional fire officer Mohammad Syed Shah.

Twelve employees ran out as soon as the fire was noticed in the third floor. As huge balls of smoke billowed above the building, eight employees stranded on the top floor were evacuated before the fire and rescue services could arrive on the scene. Television sets, papers, computer terminals and other inflammables kept burning as about 50 fire personnel fought to extinguish the fire.

On the challenge before them, Shah said the office was compartmentalized and each compartment had stacks of papers which kept on burning from different sides. Besides, water could not reach the interior directly. As the facade of the building had glasses, they had to be broken to force the water inside.

A fireman, named Kingsly, suffered a cut on his back and after treatment he made himself available shortly. Likewise another fireman fainted, but after first aid he too returned to work, said Syed.

Since the fire took place on the arterial road in downtown Trichy, a large number of onlookers gathered at the spot. Police had to close the road at both ends and the traffic was diverted through the Thillainagar main road. Police commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav visited the scene of fire in the evening. Trichy West MLA Paranjothi also visited the spot.

Meanwhile, the 42-meter aerial Skylift, which the Trichy fire department had acquired last year, could not be used in Triveni building as it could be conveniently used for fire fighting only in buildings with a minimum of five stories, explained Shah.

The district fire officer said the building did not have sprinklers that would automatically sprinkle water in the event of a fire. It also lacked hose wheels and fire extinguishers, he said.

‘Tiruchi has lowest number of maternal deaths’

The district has recorded the lowest number of maternal deaths, compared to other districts in Tamil Nadu this year, based on the recent maternal audit, according to a statement made by Manoharan, Joint Director of Health Services, Tiruchi, here on Thursday.

Mr. Manoharan was speaking at Oculofest’13 organised at K.A.P. Viswanathan Government Medical College to observe World Sight Day in Tiruchi.

Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, expressed happiness over the fact. “The commitment and dedication of doctors in the district and the infrastructure facilities provided by health insurance scheme of government are the reasons for this achievement,” she said.

Quoting statistics, she said the percentage of deliveries in government hospitals had increased from 54 in 2007 to 66 so far this year. Similarly, the number of maternal deaths has fallen from 53 in 2007 to 19 so far this year. The infant mortality rate has reduced to 11.8 this year from 17 in 2007. “There is a need to create awareness among the public about the various beneficial schemes of the government. One such scheme is the menstrual hygiene scheme through which the government has distributed 91, 235 sanitary napkins to under privileged girls in the district alone,” she said.

Urging everyone to overcome the stigma associated with discussing the issue of menstrual hygiene, she appealed to doctors to spread awareness about it, especially in rural areas.
