Idea to organise annual music festival in Tiruchi mooted

A function organised jointly by various music sabhas to honour mridangam vidwan ‘Tiruchi' Sankaran motivated the sabha office-bearers to chart out a plan for organising annual music festival, on the lines of the one being organised in Chennai by leading and noted music institutions.

Mr. Sankaran was honoured with the FGN Memorial award by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha and a cross section of sabha representatives and vidwans honoured him on the occasion with mementos.

In his acceptance address, Mr. Sankaran underlined the need for organising an annual music festival in the city and the joint effort by all the music sabhas in the city would set a new trend in the State.

In this context, he referred to a proposal mooted on the occasion by A.Venkata Ganesh, secretary of Sri Karpaga Vinayagar Isai Sangam, Srirangam, to organise the annual festival so as to cater to the needs of music lovers and also musicians.

Mr. Sankaran went down the memory lane and said that his first ‘arangetram' in 1955 was with eminent singers of Alathur Brothers, when Lalgudi Jayaraman provided violin support.

He said that in his long journey along the ocean of music, he had undergone rigorous practice under great musicians in the order of ‘Palakad' Mani Iyer; Venkataraman and others. He considered the award conferred in his native soil as the greatest achievement.

A.K.C. Natarajan, clarinet maestro, who presided over the function, appreciated the joint effort by all ‘sabhas' in the city in organising the festival. R. Tahyumanavan, noted mridangam artiste, said that Mr. Sankaran had fully utilised the knowledge in music gifted to great musicians in the order of Musiri Brothers.

N. Gopalswamy, Director of Dalmia Cements (Bharath) Limited, said that Mr. Sankaran's achievements including the honour from the Music Academy with ‘Sankeetha Kalanidhi' award testified to his devotion and dedication to his mentors. Nagai R. Muralidaran, violin artiste, referred to Mr. Sankaran;s extraordinary contribution to this fine arts.

N. Sekar, honorary secretary of Rasika Ranjana Sabha, who read out a citation, referred to Mr. Sankaran's commitment in learning music. Padma Swaminathan, daughter of the late F.G. Natesan, founder of the Sabha, in her message, recalled Mr. Sankaran's extraordinary capability in handling the percussion instrument.

S. Thiyagarajan, secretary of Sri Sathguru Thiagbrahma Aradhana Trust, referred to Mr. Sankaran's association with great musicians including Subramanian in Tennur. Mr. Sankaran had mesmerised the audience through his perfect beats and precision in notes. Earlier, Mr. Natarajan presented the FGN Memorial award to Mr. Sankaran.

Concert

Later, ‘Tiruchi' Ramesh, vocalist, presented a vocal concert.

Other institutions which co-sponsored the programme included Sri Sringeri Sankara Mutt; Sri Sahguru Sankeetha Sabha; Sri Rama Gana Sabha; Sri Nadhadweepam Trust and Bharathia Vidhya Bhavan.

Darshan opens presence on a promising note

SOULFUL RENDITION: The Madras String Quartet mesmerising music lovers at a classical programme in the city on Sunday.
Initiative to usher in appreciation for culture lauded

Resplendent bhavas in the carnatic vocal rendition of S. Krithika of Thanjavur, and a scintillating performance of the Madras String Quartet, one of India's foremost Western chamber music ensembles, to an appreciative audience at the Devar Hall on Sunday marked the birth of Darshan in its new incarnation to serve as a window for art and beyond, in fond memory of J. Balaraman, a connoisseur of drama. The music concerts were inaugurated by ‘Sangeetha Sudha' Champa Kalkura.

Darshan has had a glorious past, starting its journey in the cultural milieu of Tiruchi four decades ago, in the forms of Readers' Forum, formed to critically evaluate serious works of contemporary Tamil writers; Cine Forum, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Bess, that had the privilege of screening the best films of doyens of world cinema; and the Tiruchi Nataka Sangam that staged as many as thirty dramas, thanks to the herculean efforts of N.Jambunathan.

Inaugurating Darshan, Rev. Sr. Margaret Bastin, Principal, Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, appreciated the non-profit organisation for its initiative to usher in a sense of appreciation for culture among the younger generation.

She felt that patronisation for art forms ought to be better in a place like Tiruchi, the birth place for several artistes, Sr. Margaret Bastin said, explaining how art brings about mental transformation.

Offering felicitations, Rajeswari Ramakrishnan, a connoisseur of fine arts associated with Darshan, felt that a cultural renaissance hinges on rich public patronisation of concerts in a scenario of increasing stress.

With a vision of creating more just, more equitable, more humane, more aesthetic, and spiritually absorbing civil society, Darshan intends to promote an awareness of the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry among the youth in the country with a string of programmes focussing on classical arts and their rituals, mythology and philosophy.

Darshan believes that by encouraging an awareness of the profound and subtler values of art forms, the genuine spirit of enquiry in the young can be provoked, making them kind and gentle human beings.

To inspire them and make them inspire others, Darshan lays greater stress on classical music, dance and serious films.

It has plans to organise a series of music concerts.

Hi mods,

Please merge this thread with Expo, Events and Entertainment thread. Because already we have many threads which is not updated for very long time. Also it will be very difficult to search the thread if its not updated regularly.

so lets all stick to the existing threads and please going forward do not create any more new threads.

This is my humble request to all.

correct me if im wrong.
