Hotels hope to ride on poll demand

TRICHY: The upcoming general election seems to have brought some cheer to the hospitality industry in the city. Hotels and lodges are seeing a gradual rise in business as the campaign gets wind. Rooms are in needs as the entourage of visiting leaders arrives in the city. The demand for rooms has been gradual, but hostel industry hopes that in the days to come as the polling date nears, business will improve.

The campaign is yet to peak. However, candidates accompanied by cadres are canvassing among voters in the city. Though party leaders are yet to hit the campaign trail, hotels and lodges are already witnessing a rise in occupancy. Any meeting of a political party or a brief stopover by a political leader is good news for hotels, as cadres too swarm in and book rooms. Hotels, determined to make the best of the opportunity, are offering packages and discounts to the visiting politicians.

Though prominent hotels in the city refused to divulge information regarding occupancy and booking records of political parties, hotels managers confided to this reporter that many parties have requested for rooms. Discounts are offered to parties on the basis of the number of rooms finally booked.

According to Sreeram, deputy general manager of SRM group of hotels located at Kajamalai, elections are the only time when politicians come forward asking for rooms. "Other than elections, it happens only when a national or a regional level leader visits the city. With only a few weeks are left for election and major leaders are set to visit the district. So, a number of queries have come up from parties on the availability of rooms," he said.

During DMK's 10th state-level conference, most of the hotels located near the Central Bus Stand were filled to more than capacity, said a party member who did not wish to be named. The hotels charges ranges between Rs 500 and 1,500 for a night.

Besides the hotels near Central Bus Stand, the ones located en route to Sri Rangam are also favoured by visiting politicians. Prakash M, MD of Hotel Maya residency, said, "With still three weeks left for the election, the hotel has just started receiving orders from political parties."

"Most party cadres, be at any level, want to stay in an A class hotel since it is a prestige issue. They compel the district leaders to book rooms in the premium ones," said a Congress member.

Trichy is the gateway to eastern Tamil Nadu where various temples, navagraha temples, churches, mosques are present..So there is a regular flow of tourists are crossing trichy to reach the eastern parts of tamil nadu..So, a prominent hotel with Lodging facilities between ariyamangalam and thiruverumbur will be very much useful and also there is a chance for good business...
