Tiruchi losing its green cover

Great loss:Trees that were cut along West Boulevard Road in Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: The city's sparse green cover has come under immense pressure over the past few months as trees along several arterial roads and the suburbs continue to be felled by various agencies for road development.

Trees on West Boulevard Road, an arterial road in the city, are the latest casualties to the mindless attack. The Tiruchi Corporation which recently removed three temples along the road as part of an encroachment eviction drive has started cutting down trees, apparently to widen the road. Already about half-a-dozen trees have been felled and sources told ‘The Hindu' that the civic body has written to the revenue authorities seeking permission for cutting down other trees along the road. This would entail mowing down several other huge shade-giving trees along the road.

The Corporation plans to blacktop the road ‘end-to-end,' a much-touted concept by the civic body in recent days. Trees become the first and immediate casualties in this approach. Thillai Nagar Main Road and many cross roads in the posh locality, East Boulevard Road and few other places have been shorn off their tree cover. Already, scores of trees have been removed for the four-lane projects around the city.

Though the Corporation often promises to compensate for the green cover lost, it has so far failed to live up to its word. A greening drive initiated by the District Exnora in association with the Corporation along Shastri Road was abruptly stopped within a couple of days of its launch. A few saplings planted along the road were pulled out and pits dug for the purpose were closed with concrete, reportedly under instructions from local political bigwigs. Roadside trees were often used as convenient shelters, it was contended. But many see it as a specious argument.

However, most civic activists maintain that they were not opposed to road development but only seek a balanced approach. “We are not opposed to widening the roads. But cutting trees should be the last resort and should be done only if it was completely essential on a case-to-case basis,” says M. Sekaran, Convenor, Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations. He points out that in many places such as East Boulevard Road cutting trees has not resulted in any improvement. Moreover, the additional space created was used for parking goods vehicles or by shopkeepers for extending their space. In some places, trees have been cut without obtaining the mandatory permission from the authorities, he claimed.

C. Balasubramanian, honorary secretary, District Exnora, maintains that they were not against cutting trees for widening roads but insists that the Corporation should adequately compensate for the trees lost.

The widening of Thillai Nagar Main Road has been helpful for motorists, but in some other places the very purpose of cutting trees has been defeated as the additional space is occupied by roadside vendors or used as parking area. The Corporation, he suggests, should take up planting of saplings in a big way at chosen places.

Corporation officials say that roads that are to be developed under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project have provisions for creating green space and the situation will be rectified soon.

for ex,after they removed the trees in thillai nagar main rd,i beleive it looses his posh.

we should try to have trees in the full city wherever possible..

atleast using that, we can compete with other biggies like madurai,salem..
