GATE commands more patronage

Patronage for GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) has apparently increased what with public sector undertakings, including Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Powergrid, recruiting candidates for positions of engineer trainee, graduate apprentice engineers and executive trainees respectively, based on the score in the All India examination.

Awareness of GATE, administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology is catching up well in Tiruchi region, according to principals of engineering colleges and trainers. At least 8,000 candidates from Tiruchi region appeared for the examination, according to an estimate by GATE Forum, Tiruchi Centre. Of the about 250 students trained through the forum, 12 are within the first 1,000 All India rank, and the names of two among the 12 figure among the first 100 rank holders, according to S. Sivakumar, Director, Tiruchi Plus, which administers GATE Forum Tiruchi Centre.

No doubt, the awareness has increased. Yet, the inclination of employable candidates who otherwise prefer IT jobs to pursuing post-graduation with GATE scholarship must rise, V. Gopalakrishnan, principal, Saranathan College of Engineering, said. Both acknowledged that the performance of candidates from Tamil Nadu in GATE has to improve a lot. As per the directives of Ministry of Human Resource Development, when a candidate is selected through interview for postgraduate programmes (Master and Doctoral) with the Ministry's scholarship/ assistantship, minimum 70 per cent weightage is given to performance in GATE and the rest for academic record and interview.

A candidate declared ‘GATE qualified at the time of admission' is entitled to MHRD fellowship for 24 months. There are also institutions that specify GATE qualification as the mandatory requirement even for admission without MHRD scholarship/ assistantship.

Making GATE qualification an entry point for employment in public sector undertakings is a welcome step to motivate students to prepare themselves for jobs in core areas, said N. Anantharaman, Dean-Academic, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi. There has been a steady increase in the number of candidates in the Institute appearing for the examination due to this reason, he said.

The results for GATE 2012 were declared on Thursday by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, the organising institute. The three- hour test in 21 papers was conducted in 860 centres and 170 cities/towns across the country on two days: the computer based online exam in six papers on 29th January 2012 and the offline exam in the remaining fifteen papers on 12th February 2012. A total of 7,77,134 candidates registered for GATE 2012 and 6,86,614 candidates appeared for the exam.

The IIT Delhi zone has topped among the other zones with 18,927 candidates figuring in the list of qualified candidates, followed by IIT Madras (17,343), IIT Kharagpur (15,735), IISc Bangalore (14,379), IIT Kanpur (12,469), IIT Roorkee (12,328), IIT Bombay (12,287), and IIT Guwahati (5,058), according to Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Organising Chairman, GATE 2012, IIT Delhi.

A platform to gauge employability skills

Participants of Master Mind 2012 during an interactive session in Tiruchi on Tuesday.

Twenty-two colleges from eight districts in the state took part in Master Mind 2012, an annual event dedicated to the development of employability skills in students. Aimed at arts and science students, the day-long event was split into three stages that tested their current affairs, group discussion skills, and their capacity to face a stress interview.

“The first stage, India Quiz, is a written test of the students' knowledge in current affairs. The idea is to promote the habit of keeping abreast with the latest happenings around the world,” said Prof.G.Balakrishnan, chief panellist for the day. Adding that this was the ninth consecutive Master Mind to be held in the city, he said that the event was attended by 166 students.

The 60 students who qualified for the next round were engaged in a session of group discussion that let them explore its dynamics like the five roles (initiator, information giver, information seeker, moderator and summeriser) and the types of participants (aggressive, passive and assertive). “The group discussion, titled ‘We learn to fly when we walk with the giants', was a confidence-building measure for students from rural and government colleges,” said Mr. Balakrishnan. The session encouraged the students to be assertive participants rather than aggressive or passive ones. The12 finalists were tested for endurance at the stress interview round, with questions being based on what they filled into a self-assessment form. The form covered aspects like their greatest achievement, strengths and weaknesses, role model and where they envisioned themselves in the year 2018.

The six-member panel that interviewed the finalists consisted of Prof. Balakrishnan, the chief panellist, P.V. Devaraj, John Louis, T. Shadina, T. K. Sridhar and Yamuna Sridhar. While questioning the finalists in a setting that simulated a real life interview, they also gave participants fundamental pointers on how to handle the interview. “The importance of establishing eye contact with all the members of the panel, without making it look too contrived, the difference between being talkative and being communicative and the ways in which you addressed the panellists and apologised were some of the tips given. The first prize of Rs. 2,500 was won by K.A. Mahalakshmi from Cauvery College for Women, while B. Rinaldo from St. Joseph's College and A.H. Mohamed Imran from Jammal Mohammad College won the second and third prizes of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,500 respectively. The event was sponsored by Archana Sweets and Café.
