Tiruchi Corporation keen to focus on school-level education

The City Corporation may soon take over administration of primary and upper primary schools in its ambit.

Unlike in the case of schools in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai corporations, the role of civic body in school education Tiruchi has been confined only to maintenance of buildings. The schools here are administered by the Education department.

Barring one high school at Sempattu, where, incidentally, the SSLC result was the poorest this year in the district, the Tiruchi Corporation only has primary and upper primary schools where children of labourers from below poverty line families study. They get stranded as they pass out, since the parents cannot afford to pay exorbitant fee for their secondary and higher secondary education in private or even government-aided schools.

Corporation Commissioner V.P. Dhandapani told ‘The Hindu' that the Corporation will explore scope to construct schools and rope in private agencies to run them. There were unutilised funds for education, he said.Support of district administration

The civic body will take the support of the district administration and the education department for putting in place a plan of action for starting higher secondary schools in the corporation to cater to the educational requirements of children from below poverty line families.

Wherever possible, the central schemes focussing on poverty alleviation will be dovetailed, Mr. Dhandapani said.

Teachers' organisations welcome move

According representatives of teachers' organisations, the City Corporation's line of thought was most welcome, albeit late.

Citing the sterling performance of schools in other corporations, they felt that once the schools are started and secure recognition of the education department, experienced teachers of government schools will be able to secure posting to the newly created vacancies, in the process of transfer counselling.

Plans to help students crack the UPSC riddle

Image
SHARING SUCCESS:A successful UPSC candidate sharing his views at an interactive session in Tiruchi on Saturday. Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, and P. Suresh Kumar, former assistant director of employment exchange, are in the picture.

The district administration has planned to motivate young students and graduates to sit for the Union Public Service Commission examination. A meeting of 125 college students, all UPSC aspirants , was held under the auspices of the Tiruchi Academy of Competitive Examinations (TRACE) here on Saturday, to analyse the cause of ‘setback' in the last examination. Three successful candidates of last three years explained their methodology for facing the examination successfully.

Every aspect of the proposed training was drafted in detail in consultation with students and resource persons. It was initially decided to organise intensive week-end sessions at the TRACE campus at the Kalaiarangam.

Similar meeting would be held in Musiri and Lalgudi for motivating the students of these regions to sit for the UPSC test. Candidates' aptitude for various other competitive examinations such as Group I, II, IV competitive examinations would be held, according to G.Sampath, Personal Assistant (General), to Collector.

Delivering the key note address, Jayashree Muralidharan, expressed shock over the sudden fall in the number of successful candidates from Tamil Nadu. “At least Tiruchi district should regain the glory in this regard,” she said adding that a number of officials from the district administration, including Mr.Sampath, N.Sakthivel, Revenue Divisional Officer, besides resource persons led by P.Suresh Kumar, former Assistant Director of Employment Exchange, would organise various sessions to guide the candidates.

The Collector went down the memory lane in narrating her failure at the interview session. She advised candidates to shun their inhibition and be relaxed while facing the interview . Tolerance to criticism would lead the candidates towards success. She particularly referred to the cooperation and encouragement lent by her husband in preparing for the examination.

The Collector specifically referred to the importance of reading newspapers, particularly The Hindu . Its editorial analysis, handling of issues and reports on various people-oriented issues – categorised into important topics such as ‘national', ‘regional' ‘economics' ‘science' provided a lot of information. She also advised students to read the ‘year book' which provided interesting tips about various events around the globe.

R.Lalitha, Dr.K.Senthil Raj and P.Sridharan – the successful candidate from the central district – gave useful tips. They said that more than hard work, UPSC test-oriented smart preparation would fetch success. They also explained the advantages of sourcing information from various websites.

Students set to experience joyous learning under trimester system

Image

On Friday, the first day of the first of the three terms in 2012-13 under the trimester system introduced for class 1 to VIII, teachers explained to students that they will henceforth relish the teaching-learning process sans burden, both in terms of the weight of school bags and the content to be covered for examinations.

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system, in which secondary and graduate teachers have undergone considerable training, will ensure that the students are evaluated for both scholastic and co-scholastic activities through formative and summative assessments.

Under the grading pattern, the students' usual tendency to indulge in rat-race for marks will be replaced with responsible attempts at developing life-skills, said Parthiban, a graduate teacher in a panchayat union middle school.

A shift from the Macaulay system is what the teaching community has all along been looking for to infuse interest in the teaching-learning process, though they acknowledge that there will be extra burden on teachers whose individual attention on students will be closely monitored.

Teachers believe that Activity Based Learning and Active Learning Methodologies will continue to remain in the teaching-learning process and that the significant difference will be felt only in the evaluation pattern.

However, they look for clarity as in some of the schools, teachers have been asked to revert to the system of submitting ‘plans of lessons'. Seamless integration of trimester into Samacheer Kalvi has been made possible through combining the contents of all subjects to be covered for each of the three terms into common books. The difference under trimester system is that students need not have to worry about the completed contents when they step into the subsequent term. Students will thereby have enough time to focus their attention on developing the capacity to comprehend and apply knowledge with analytical and creative thinking, the traits essential to develop their overall personality. Memorising skill alone, which was recognised hitherto by the old system, would not suffice. According to Neelakandan, a teacher at KAP Viswanatham Middle School, teachers were in the process of being oriented to the new system.

Students were given the books on the first day, and the real teaching-learning process will commence on Monday, he said, adding that more training for teachers on the new system was desirable.

Teachers are, nevertheless, happy that parity has been struck with the CBSE system at long last. In fact, the trimester system is envisaged to bridge the gap between the capacities of students. In keeping with the government order on the trimester system, the emphasis on learning outcomes demonstrated in students' performance through the well-designed curriculum will pave the way for more interactive and collaborative experiences, they sy. Heads of government schools desire that trimester system must be extended with due promptness, as promised, till Plus Two in the coming years in phases.

“Only then will government schools experience a level playing field with self-financing higher secondary institutions. Unlike in the case of private schools, government schools were not able to skip Plus One portions to concentrate on Plus Two contents,” explained Veluchamy, a headmaster of a government higher secondary school.
