TIRUCHI: Impressed by various activities carried out at the Golden Rock Railway Workshop on his maiden visit to the organisation here, Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed on Saturday underscored the need for setting up a separate Research & Development wing at the workshop.

The workshop was a prestigious railway institution earning vital foreign exchange by exporting locomotives, besides being a profitable unit, he said while flagging off the 22nd rake of container wagons to the Container Corporation of India Limited at the workshop.

Carrying out a mosaic of activities such as maintenance of coaches, periodic overhaul of locomotives and manufacture of wagons with a workforce strength of 7,000, the workshop must have a Research and Development wing, Mr. Ahamed said.

The railways was considering providing special funds to institutions such as the Golden Rock Workshop.

Modernisation of the workshop at a cost of Rs. 100 crore would further enhance its performance and make it even more impressive, Mr. Ahamed said.

Old loco to roll out with a new look

TIRUCHI: The Golden Rock Railway Workshop here has rehabilitated an over 80-year-old steam locomotive thus enabling it to resume its operation in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) section soon.

This is the third “B” class narrow gauge steam loco to be successfully rehabilitated by the workshop, thereby enhancing the life of the engine, for use in the DHR section once again.

Final touches are being given to the locomotive, weighing about 15 tonnes, which is expected to be despatched to the hilly terrain in a few days from now. The rehabilitated loco has been fitted with a new cylinder, new boiler and other boiler safety components and given a fresh coat of painting. However, the old chassis has been retained.

Workshop officials say the rehabilitation work had been carried out in seven months without disturbing the heritage value of the oil-fired steam engine, which was originally built in 1928 by M/s Sharp and Steward – a British company.

The six-metre long locomotive was taken up for rehabilitation in January and the engine would now be in a position to run for another 10 years. The loco would travel at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometres with a capacity to haul four to five coaches.

The officials said the Railway Board had entrusted the workshop with the task of rehabilitating four DHR steam locomotives at a total cost of Rs. 2 crore. The first rehabilitated loco for the DHR was despatched in September 2006 and the second in December 2008. The fourth loco will be taken up for rehabilitation once the third was despatched.

The officials said the workshop would manufacture four new oil-fired steam locomotives for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway adding that the first locomotive was expected to roll out in one-and-a-half years.

GRW rolls out converted broad gauge engine

The Golden Rock Workshop (GRW) has rolled out broad gauge WCDS6 engine, at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, for the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) which in turn would supply it to public sector undertakings.

Mr V Carmelus, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway said that it was a better option to convert metre gauge engine to a broad gauge engine instead of going for a new one. Cement maufacturers, Bharat Heavy Electricals, coal companies and giant engi neering companies required broad guage engines for hauling their materials for short distances, he said.

The converted engines could be used for 25 years. The GRW's performance had been so good consistently, that it would be shortly upgraded into a production unit by the Indian Railway, Mr Carmelus said.

It had rolled out 1005 wagons in the current financial year, the highest ever by any Indian railway workshop. He said, GRW had carved a niche for itself in the construction of low level platform container wagons for the public sector undertaking - Conta iner Corporation of India Ltd (Concor). - PTI
