Battery-operated cars at more stations soon

Image

Southern Railway has proposed to extend the battery-operated car service on chargeable basis to more railway stations falling within the limits of Tiruchi Railway Division.

The plan is to engage interested agencies to provide the service at the chosen railway stations for a period of five years to facilitate transportation of the physically challenged and senior citizens coming to the station and alighting from the train.

The railway administration has identified 17 stations falling within the jurisdiction of Tiruchi Division where it has planned to introduce the new facility.

They include the railway junctions at Villupuram, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Velankanni, Vellore, Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur, Puducherry and Nagore, sources said.

A senior railway official here said the administration had invited expression of interest from agencies or organisations interested in providing the service on chargeable basis for five years.

The applicants were asked to mention the charges they intended to levy per passenger, details of the battery car in their possession and their experience in operation of battery cars, besides other details relating to their business.

The battery-operated car facility, which was launched in Tiruchi Junction and initially provided free of cost for some time through sponsor, was made into a paid service thereafter as per the Railway Board’s new policy.

The senior official said there was good response for the service on chargeable basis at Tiruchi. A battery-operated car was being run from the approach road of Tiruchi Junction up to the station’s circulating area free of cost to help all travellers carrying their personal belongings.

Plan to remove encroachments

Image

For free movement of vehicles on road towards Tiruverumbur railway station

It is only a matter of time before all encroachments along the road leading to the newly constructed Railway Station at Tiruverumbur are evicted, it is learnt.

The encroachers of railway land in the Burma Colony to a length of about 200 metres from the Thanjavur Highway to Adarsh status station have been told by the railway officials that they would have to vacate, sources said.

The authorities conveyed its plan for eviction of the encroachment to the district administration and the City Corporation, according to official sources. Removal of the encroachments was vital for two-way movement of cars and larger vehicles, a senior official said.

The authorities recently assured to consider the plea by public welfare organisations for stoppage of express trains at Tirverumbur. In such an eventuality, road leading to the Railway Station will have to be wide enough for frequent two-way movement of vehicles as the number of passengers patronising the station will increase manifold, sources said.

The people will be given enough time to clear the encroachments by themselves. Eviction will be carried out forcibly only after issuing notices twice, the first with a deadline of one month and the second and last with a deadline of 15 days, another railway official said.

An eyesore that mars new Tiruverumbur railway station

Image

The presence of a pool of stagnant water in front of the newly constructed railway station at Tiruverumbur has caused inconvenience to the passengers, passers-by and local residents. The new railway station, which has been constructed near Ottamparai, was thrown open to the public about a month ago. A small pool of water is located nearby and the locals call it as “kuttai”. This has been filled up with heaps of garbage, plastic papers, tea cups, polythene bags, pet bottles and other garbage. Till recently, pigs could be seen foraging in the filth. Fortunately, this pool has no interconnectivity with other water bodies.

The recent rain has made the area more filthy with degradable and non-degradable waste being mixed indiscriminately.

What is worrying the local people and passengers is the inaction by the concerned authorities to find a solution to the issue. It has not only made the surrounding of the newly built railway station bad but is also an eyesore for Tiruverumbur.

The filth accumulation is causing a lot of inconvenience to the people, particularly passengers, who visit the railway station. Stench emanating from the pool makes it difficult for the passengers to walk. Moreover, it has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, thereby posing health hazards.

Local people point out the large scale breeding of mosquitoes in the pool. The level of accumulated garbage and filth has only been increasing with each passing day, but the concerned officials are indifferent towards this problem.

“It is posing a health hazards to us. We cannot bear the stench emanating from the kuttai. No concerned officials are bothered,” says Kashi Shree G. Shanmugavelu of Tamil Makkal Valarchi Kazhagam, Tiruverumbur.

Pointing out to the outbreak of viral fever, he said that it was due to mosquito breeding.

“It is high time to set right the issues. The Railways and the Tiruchi City Corporation officials should visit the site so as to find a solution,” he pointed out.

Mr. Shanmugavelu added that passenger amenities including toilets were highly insufficient at the newly constructed railway station. The Divisional Railway officials should take steps to construct sufficient toilets, he added.
