Travellers want halt of express trains at Tiruverumbur

Image
WAIT : The public have been demanding halt of express trains at Tiruverumbur station.

Quote:
The demand is under consideration of officials

The Tiruverumbur Railway Station has got Adarsh status featuring PRS (Passenger Reservation System), toilet, catering service and waiting room. It has come up at a new location within 200 metres from the old building that has been demolished. But there are encroachment of railway land on the sides of path leading to the newly station.

But residents of Tiruverumbur, BHEL township, Ordnance Factory Estate, HAPP, and Thuvakudi besides Kattur want the authorities to look into the demand for halt of express trains.

“Barring Mayiladuthurai-Mysuru Express, only passenger trains bound for Karaikal, Nagore, Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai stop at the station. Stoppage of express trains to Ernakulam, Chennai and Coimbatore is a necessity as there are places of tourism and pilgrim significance like Grand Anicut, Erumbeeswarar Temple and Thirunedunkulam Temple,” said N. Anbazhagan, president, Tamil Nadu Makkal Valarchi Kuzhu.

A delegation of the Kuzhu submitted a petition to the Tiruchi MP P. Kumar recently when he visited the station along with Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Arun Thomas Kalathikal and Minister Valarmathi.

Shanmugavelu, advisor of the Kuzhu, said the delegation assured the authorities that the patronage for the Tiruverumbur station would be phenomenal in the event of enforcing stoppage of express trains.

The need for rail passengers in these localities to travel for 10 to 15 km to board trains at Tiruchi Junction will be obviated. Stoppage of express trains at Tiruverumbur station will contribute to reducing traffic density along heavily congested Thanjavur Highway, K. Murali, Additional General Manager, BHEL, said.

According to sources, the demand is under consideration and a decision on the issue will hinge on two factors: track doubling and commercial justification.

The track doubling has been covered so far till Solakampatti. Once the process is completed over the next few months in the remaining stretch along Alakkudi and Budalur stations till Thanjavur, the possibility will be considered factoring in the reduction in the running time between Tiruchi and Thanjavur.

In all probability, the demand will have a reflection in the new chart in the latter part of next year, it is learnt

App-based cab service for two more railway stations soon

Image

The Southern Railway has planned to introduce App-based cab services at two more railways stations falling under the Tiruchi Railway Division limits soon. The facility was introduced at the Tiruchi Junction over a month ago.

The new facility would be put in place at Srirangam station and Thanjavur railway junction soon.

Dedicated area within the station premises has been earmarked for the chosen cab operator to park a fleet of vehicles to pick up passengers alighting at the stations.

The process for the proposed introduction of the new facility is already on with the Southern Railway administration having identified the private agency for operating the App-based cab services.

Thanjavur Junction is a major station in Tiruchi Railway Division limits falling under the ‘A’ category, while Srirangam where many important express trains halt falls under the ‘D’ category.

Railway officials told The Hindu that a separate area measuring 180 square metres would be earmarked at Srirangam station for parking of a fleet of cabs which could be booked by passengers using their smart phone.

At Thanjavur Junction, an area of 120 square metres has been set apart for parking of cabs. The facility at both stations is expected to start soon. Both stations could accommodate nearly 15 cabs each at a time, said the officials. The idea was to provide better service to rail travellers at reasonable rate and prevent over-charging, said the officials. The passengers could book in advance and facility could be availed round-the-clock.

Falling in the Villupuram – Tiruchi chord line section, Srirangam station near Tiruchi is witness to heavy movement of passengers travelling by Pallavan, Rockfort, Mangalore and Guruvayur expresses.

The movement is more during important occasion such as Vaikunta Ekadasi when devotees in large numbers come from various destinations to offer prayers at the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.

The service by Ola was launched at Tiruchi Junction in mid-August.

There has been a good response from passengers for this facility, said a senior official. On an average, over 50 for cars and more than 40 for autorickshaws are booked every day at Tiruchi junction under the service, said the officials.
