Soon, free shuttle service from Trichy railway station

Quote:
The Trichy railway division authorities have proposed to introduce shuttle service for passengers to and from the Trichy railway station. The services, which will be free, will operate from the station till the roundabout near the steam-loco put on display. Each bus can carry at least 25 people and will operate non-stop.

A Chennai-based firm has been contracted to run the service. Two buses, which will be battery operated, can each carry 25 people and luggage from the railway station platform to the main entrance roundabout and vice-versa. "Differently-abled, senior citizen and ailing persons can utilise the service to reach their respective platforms from the entrance where they alight from the bus," he added.

"On an average, Trichy railway station daily receives footfalls of 30,000 passengers, as a number of trains cross the station with many express and passenger trains.

Since most of the passengers reach the station by city buses, they have to walk from the main entrance to the platform. To facilitate passengers, the railway has taken this initiative," a senior official stated.

No money would be collected from the passengers for the service. The operator would carry advertisements on the bus for generating revenue, the official said.

"The city buses which are currently coming inside the station would gradually be stopped. It has also been decided to use the second entry for this purpose once the ongoing construction on the foot over-bridge is completed," he added.

Premium only in fees, not parking facilities at Trichy railway junction

Even as the existing parking lots at Trichy railway junction have been crying for basic amenities for years, railway authorities have allowed contractors of two-wheeler parking to fleece motorists in the name of premium parking for cars as well as two-wheelers. Motorists allege that the contractors were allowed to double the charges from August 7 without establishing basic amenities at the parking area.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu dedicated a number of facilities at railway stations across the state through video conferencing from Delhi on Saturday. The parking space at Trichy division was made 'premium' with just the prefix to the name of the existing facility. Passengers point out that there is no change in the condition of the parking lot along the main entry except for a small board depicting the revised parking charges. As per the revision that came into effect on August 7 even before inaugurating the facility, the fee is Rs 10 for up to 12 hour parking (Rs 5 earlier), Rs 20 between 12 hours and 24 hours (Rs 10 earlier) and Rs 30 for beyond 24 hours. In the case of car, the fee is Rs 20 for four hours and Rs 40 for halting 12 hours, the contractors said.

Despite the changes in the name and charges, the two-wheelers continued to remain in the scorching sun or rain. "There is no proper way to get in and out of the parking lot," said S Ramesh, a motorist. "Moreover, there is no provision for those who visit the station for drop and pick-up purposes to park two-wheelers. They are also forced to park their vehicles at the lot and paying Rs 10 for just 30 minutes", he added.

"We object to the steep increase of two-wheeler and car parking fee from Rs 10 to Rs 60. Railways has already incurred the displeasure of passengers by taking unwanted initiatives like hiking platform ticket price. All these are a clear misuse of monopoly status of the railways which needs to be changed", said S Pushpavanam, secretary of Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu.

Divisional railway manager P Uday Kumar Reddy told reporters that a new premium two-wheeler parking facility on a 9,000-square metre area at Trichy junction, which can accommodate 5,000 two-wheelers, has been launched. A similar parking area would also come up at Fort station. When asked about the premium charge that came into force before inaugurating the facility and absence of facilities, he claimed everything would be established gradually.

Now, app-based cab service at Tiruchi Junction

The facility was launched by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu

Travellers to Tiruchi can henceforth book cabs through their smart phones as the Southern Railway on Saturday launched an app-based cab service at the Tiruchi Railway Junction.

Those who cannot access the app-based service can book the cabs, to be operated by private cab operator Ola, on-the-spot at the designated booking area provided at the Railway Junction. The booking area would have space to accommodate 20 cabs of the operator, Railway officials said
.

The facility was launched by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, through video conference, on Saturday.

Even as the Railways launched the facility, a group of autorickshaw drivers operating out of the Railway Junction, reeling under stiff competition from autorickshaws run under the Ola network, staged a demonstration criticising the Railways for displacing them in favour of a private operator.

The drivers said that they have been asked to park their vehicles away from the usual area in front of the two-wheeler parking lot.

“Many of us have been operating out of the junction for 20 to 30 years and the move to allow a private operator will affect our business,” they contended. They represented their case to the Divisional Railway Manager P. U. K. Reddy. Mr.Reddy told them that the move was intended for the benefit of passengers and they would act according to the rules.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Reddy said that the new facility would help passengers have hassle-free trips without having to haggle on fares.

The Railway Minister inaugurated premium car parking area at the second entry of the Railway Junction on the Kallukuzhi side with space for 50 cars, a premium two wheeler parking lot with space for 5,000 vehicles and a car parking area at the main entry with space for 58 cars.

Besides, he inaugurated parking spaces at the Tiruchi Fort, Mannargudi and Papanasam railway stations in Tiruchi Division.

He dedicated to the nation the double line between Manapparai and Kalpattichathram, a 23-km stretch falling under Madurai Division, taken up under the Villupuram-Dindigul track doubling project.
