Tiruchirappalli Notaphily Society has organised the three-day sale-cum-exhibition

A three-day exhibition organised by the Tiruchirappalli Notaphily Society (TNS) at Sreenivasa Hall on Williams Road has been giving visitors a peek into history through a sale-cum-exhibition of numismatic, philatelic and antique collections.

Billed as the ‘Global Currency, Coins, Stamps and Antiques Expo 2017’, the fair this year features 38 stalls of collectors from Kerala, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and other places within Tamil Nadu. Pictorial exhibits are among the attractions of the fair, which also features sellers of collectors’ accessories such as stamp and coin albums.

“This annual event is our attempt to educate the youngsters about the history in our midst,” P. Vijaya Kumar, TNS member, told The Hindu.

“Most of the things here, whether the antiques, stamps or currency, were once in use and held a meaning for the user. With the recent move towards a cashless society, we are not sure whether children will even recognise coins and currency notes any more. These objects were once treasured, and now have to be reintroduced to the public,” he added.

Quite a few of the visitors were seen browsing through the variety of currencies and stamps from all over the world, and clicking photographs of some of the rarer artefacts on their mobile phones.

“The hobby of stamp and currency collection has been steadily growing, but the business has been stagnant,” said V. Ethiraj, a dealer in used postage stamps, coins and old covers, based in Chennai. “Very often new collectors splash out on a fancy stamp and then give up when the value doesn’t appreciate. Collectors should consult dealers and experienced hobbyists about how to build a set that will be valuable several years down the line,” he said.

For veteran V. S. K. Jeyasingh, who has been a collector and dealer of stamps, coins and British India currency notes for the past 42 years in Chennai, business has been on the upswing. Besides 1 kilo silver commemorative coins, Jeyasingh also has a pre-Independence 5000 rupee note. “These notes are valuable because they are no longer in circulation,” he said. The stall managed by K. Syed Meeran from Chakkarapalli in Ayyampettai (Thanjavur district) has a vast display of Sangam-era antiques that have been dredged up from river beds. Besides coins and royal stamps made of copper and other rare metals, he also specialises in display sets for educational institutions.

His shop in Ayyampettai includes his own personal collection of antiques, which includes old land documents, and a sword thought to belong to the Chola era. “The challenge in the antiques business is to ensure authenticity. We restrict ourselves to products with genuine antecedents.”

The exhibition concludes on Sunday.
