ramkumar, thanks for the update on the movies.. its now really nice to see hindi movies running regularly.. can u pls tell me the source of it cos each time wen i need info on movies running in trichy its quiet difficult to find them.

Good response to Poompuhar expo

The month-long handicrafts and handloom exhibition-cum-sale that began at the Poompuhar sales show room of the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation at Singarathope here on Friday evoked good response as large number of people have started showing interest in purchasing the exquisite handicrafts and handloom items.

Collector T. Soundiah inaugurated the exhibition on Friday organised in connection with the ensuing Christmas and New Year festivals till January 1 next year. The Collector said that nearly Rs.50 lakh worth handicrafts and handloom items were kept on display for sale and a sales target of Rs.10 lakh had been fixed for this exhibition. Last year, about Rs.30 lakh worth of handicrafts items were displayed in the exhibition fetching a total sale of Rs.eight lakh, he said.

K.Chidambaranathan, Manager of Poompuhar sales show room, Tiruchi, told The Hindu on Sunday that the exhibition would be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all the days including Sundays.

He said that the exhibition had been organised to encourage the artisans to market their handcrafts through this exhibition.

The price of the handicrafts displayed in the exhibition ranges from Rs.10 to Rs.38,000, he said.

Panchaloha idols of Lord Nataraja, Lord Ganapathy and other deities made by Poompuhar icon production centre at Swamimalai, Thanjavur art plates, brass lamps made at Nachiarkovil, Madurai and Vagaikulam, granite images of Mamallapuram, intricately carved sandalwood handicrafts items from Kallakurichi and Sungudi and other handloom sarees made in Tamil Nadu have been exhibited, he said.

Besides, several handicrafts and handloom items including wood and metal carvings from Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh were kept in plenty in the exhibition. The Moradabad brass plates and ornamental lamps, Jaipur precious stones, etc attracted the buyers.

Uttar Pradesh handicrafts, a major attraction of the expo
Kalanjali Craft Bazar 2009 to go on till December 15


TIRUCHI: Eye catching handicrafts of Uttar Pradesh, worth over Rs.30 lakh, are on display at the annual handicrafts exhibition –Kalanjali Craft Bazar 2009’ which commenced at the Indian Medical Association Hall in the city on Saturday. The exhibition is being organised by the Coimbatore-based Kalanjali, Uttar Pradesh Handicrafts, Handloom and Artisans’ Association.

North Easter Cane, bamboo items; wooden household articles; wood carving items; Jaipuri lac bangles; brass and iron work handicrafts; Jaipur chudidars and dress materials; Kalamkari, Lalahasti wall hanging; Lucknow chicken works; shoulder bags; handloom cotton, batick and Jaipur bedsheets, pillow covers etc. Terrakota pottery; furniture items like television tables, study tables and chairs are added attraction of the expo.

The cultural heritage of the people of Uttar Pradesh are most conspicuous by the exquisite handicraft items. These handicrafts are a window to the past and each item reflected superb craftsmanship and remarkable dexterity, and intimate bled of aesthetics and utilising to produce results which makes every onlooker marvel at them.

Realising the need to preserve rich heritage of the crafts and bring them back into limelight, the Uttar Pradesh Handicrafts, Handlooms, Artisans Association has brought out this exhibition.

The main objective of the show is being promotion and development of handloom and handicrafts and activation of income generation activities for the craft persons of the State. The association not only motivates craftsmen to continue practicing their hereditary skills, but also revived several dwindling crafts, according to Kevin Evers, Manager of Kalanjali.

He said the association has been actively in survey and documentation of handicrafts imparting intensive training to craft persons for skill upgradation, design development and product diversification. It has been lending marketing support of craft persons by organising and participating in exhibition at national and international levels, as well as direct marketing of products through a chain emporia all over the country.

A total of 35 stalls have bee put up in this expo, which will go on till December 15. Handicrafts, all worth over Rs.30 lakhs have been displayed at the exhibition.

“It has been targeted to achieve a sales target of Rs. 12 lakhs through this year’s exhibition. Similar expo held last time managed a sale proceeds of Rs. 8 lakhs”, he added.
