Exhibition on products of SHGs

TIRUCHI: A month-long exhibition on products manufactured by women’s self-help groups will open on St. Joseph’s College campus in the city on September 14.

The exhibition, organised in connection with the Navarathri festival, will feature products manufactured by various SHGs of the district in 30 stalls. Products such as fashion jewellery, decorative items, herbal products, jute bags, saris and readymade garments, food products, terracotta items and saplings for kitchen gardens would be available.

The exhibition will be open from 3 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. every day. Products of SHGs from other districts will also be on display, Collector T.Soundiah said in a release.

Book fair from Friday

TIRUCHI: The Rotary Club of Tiruchirappalli will organise a Book Fair in the city from September 11. The 10-day fair will be held at the Makkal Mandram up to September 20.

About 60 publishers and book sellers from all over the country will participate in the fair, which will function from 2.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. on week days and from 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Krishnamurthy Foundation India; Abi Book Centre; New Century Book House; Sahitya Akademy; Emerald Publishers; Sri Ramakrishna Math; Anantha Vikatan, Stardotsar Software Limited; Blackie Books, Apple Publishing International and other leading publishing houses will participate in the exhibition. Over one lakh books of various subjects would be on display.

Books and compact discs of various subjects and disciplines will be available for sale at the fair which will have a total number of 75 stalls. Academics, authors and poets will deliver special addresses on different topics every day evening at the venue.

The fair will be inaugurated by the Commissioner of Police Karuna Sagar. An entry fee of Rs. 2 will be charged from each visitor.

The club had been successfully conducting the Book Fair for the past 22 years from 1987, its president R. Kalaiselvan told the media here on Tuesday.

Get eye-catching handicrafts of north-eastern region in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: Eye-catching handicrafts of North-Eastern region are on display at the three-week long exhibition ‘North East Crafts Fair’ which commenced at the Makkal Mandram in the city on Wednesday.

The District Collector, T. Soundiah, declared open the exhibition, organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited, a Government of Indian enterprises, with the financial support extended by the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, Union Ministry of Textiles.

The exhibition of traditional crafts of common people of North-Easter region presents an endless array of crafts creations from beauty loving and artistic people of eight states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.

Cane and bamboo crafts; handloom weaving; artistic textile weaving; wood carving; embroidery; jewellery; brass and bell metal basketry are some of the time honoured traditional crafts of the North Eastern region. The hand woven fabrics with rich and symbolic ornamentation of Assam, tribal ornaments made of cane, bamboo, glass beads and silver; carpets using dragon, geometric and floral motifs of Arunachal Pradesh are on display.

The beautiful toys and dolls made of straw and clay; ‘Laishingfee’ quilted cotton materials and Kauna grass cushions and mattress of Manipur, famous pine apple fibre articles of Meghalaya; bamboo artistic cap of Mizoram; colour tribal weaves as well as the wooden handicrafts and Nagar spear of Nagaland; most versatile and popular cane and bamboo creations from Tripura provide added attraction to the show. The main objectives of the show are increase awareness on North Eastern handicrafts, expose craftsmen to the market; eradicate middlemen; etc, according to the General Manager of the Corporation, D. C. Borkotoky.

Over 140 crafts persons and weavers representing different crafts of the above states are participating in this fair with their artistic creations. In addition to the display and sale of crafts objects and textiles, there will also be a demonstration of skill and craftsmanship by selected crafts persons at the exhibition premises.

The monthly production of handlooms of North Eastern region represents 7.5 per cent of the total monthly production of the country and Manipur records 67 per cent of the exports against total exports of this region, he said.

The exhibition will be continued till September 6 and will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

தொடர்ந்து 3 நாள்கள் நடைபெறவுள்ள இந்தக் கண்காட்சியில் கேனான், நிக்கான், எப்சன் உள்பட உலகின் முன்னணி நிறுவனங்கள் பங்கு பெறுகின்றன.

தொடக்க விழாவில் திரைப்பட இயக்குநரும், எடிட்டருமான பி. லெனின், திரைப்பட ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் கே. ரவிசங்கரன் உள்ளிட்டோர் கலந்து கொள்ளவுள்ளனர்' என்றார் அவர். சங்கச் செயலர் கே. சேகர், பொருளாளர் ஆர். கிள்ளிவளவன் உள்ளிட்டோர் உடனிருந்தனர்.
