“Integrated bus stand, market complex soon”

TIRUCHI: Steps were being taken to establish an integrated bus stand and a new market complex in Tiruchi, said Transport Minister K. N. Nehru here on Wednesday.

“We have taken up the issue with the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin and sought sanction of funds for the projects,” he said speaking after distributing free television sets to about 2,786 families in ward 57 in the City.

The new market complex is planned to accommodate the wholesale markets which are to be shifted from the congested Gandhi Market area.

During the past three years, development works worth Rs.500 crore have been sanctioned for Tiruchi City, including drinking water supply works worth Rs.169 crore and Rs.207 crore for the flood control project.

The road network in the City would be strengthened at a cost of about Rs.125 crore.

About 1,500 families, who have been residing in government lands, have been issued free house site pattas and about 600 more families would get pattas soon, he said.

Collector T. Soundiah said free television sets have been given to about 2.37 lakh families in the district so far at a cost of Rs.57 crore.

About 1.57 lakh more families would be given the television sets soon. About 48,000 handicapped persons and widows were being given the monthly assistance of Rs.400 each, he said.

Commissioner T. T. Balsamy, Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan and others spoke.

Plea to establish integrated bus stand

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi zonal unit Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Employees AITUC Union has urged the district administration and the Tiruchi Corporation to take steps to establish an integrated bus stand in the city at the earliest.

Tiruchi city, though centrally located in the State, has been lacking an integrated bus stand. A proposal for establishing an integrated bus stand has been hanging fire since 1985. While other cities such as Madurai and Salem and even smaller towns such as Pudukottai and Thanjavur have got new bus stands, Tiruchi was yet to get one.

The Central Bus Stand in the city was facing heavy traffic congestion, especially during the nights, when a large number of buses converge here.

Even after the recent expansion, the bus stand does not have enough space to accommodate all buses and town bus halts were located outside the bus stand. The mushroom growth of shops and vendors, occupying vantage points in the bus stand unmindful of the difficulties faced by travellers, only compounded the problem, the union said in a resolution adopted at its recent of members of city branches held on Wednesday.

Mofussil buses to Perambalur, Thuraiyur, Ariyalur, Jayamkondam and Cuddalore routes were being operated from the roadsides near the Chathram Bus Stand.

There was no infrastructure at the mofussil terminus. The delay in executing the proposal on establishing an integrated bus stand gave rise to suspicions that an influential lobby could be stalling the project, the union said.

The meeting also called upon the district administration to take appropriate measures to check the increasing accidents in Tiruchi city. In many parts of the city, the roadsides have been encroached by traders and commercial complexes. Roadsides were being used as parking space and the roads around the Central Bus Stand were being used by omni bus operators to park their vehicles indiscriminately. Action should be taken against police officials who failed to act against the omni bus operators and Corporation officials who have allowed commercial complexes to encroach the roads.

Through another resolution, the union criticised the police for allowing encroachments along the Vella Mandi and Vengaya Mandi near the Gandhi Market. A large number of traders occupy a major portion of the road and both the police and the Corporation officials were turning a blind eye to the problem. The encroachments were causing heavy traffic congestion and wastage of fuel. The mandis should be shifted out of the city.

The meeting was chaired by A.Yogamanickam and attended by N.Mani, general secretary and other office bearers.
