The plan involves construction of the ‘Amavasai mandapam' on an outlay of Rs. 6.10 crore, expansion of outer praharam (Rs.2.40 crore) and construction of a guest house (Rs.2.20 crore). Samayapuram temple golden car renovation work begins

TIRUCHI: The work on the renovation of the golden car of Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple near here commenced on Friday. The golden car was made of gold, silver and wood in equal proportions.

Under the renovation, the silver that had been used in the car would be replaced with gold. “We have already removed the silver components of the car. The quantum of silver removed weighed about eight kilogram,” said B. Barathi, Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and also the Executive Officer of the temple.

The highlight of the renovation work was the addition of gold. A large number of devotees offered gold to the temple in fulfilment of their vows. In fact, the temple had sold gold to a few temples, including Sri Vekkali Amman Temple in Woraiyur in Tiruchi, for making the golden car.

“Gold available with the temple, weighing nine kilogram, will be added to the existing structure,” Ms. Barathi said.

Donor work

The other works associated with renovation was being executed as donor work.

The renovation work, which was being executed in the presence of Ilamparithi, Deputy Commissioner and Verifying Officer, would be completed in a week's time, she added.

The maiden run of the golden car would be held soon. Devotees made it a point to pull the golden car on payment of the prescribed fee, in fulfilment of their vows. Ms. Barathi also said that the temple authorities had planned to construct a guest house for the benefit of the devotees.

Work on expansion of the outer ‘praharam' of the temple and the ‘Amavasai mandapam' would also be taken up in course of time.
