Pilgrims take holy dip in Cauvery river on 'mahalaya amavasya'

SRIRANGAM: The temple town of Srirangam which always bustles with a lot of excitement laced with religious fervor on Friday attracted a sea of people on the bank of Cauvery at Amma Mandapam to observe the ritual of 'Mahalaya Amavasya,' a day observed to pay homage to their departed loved ones. Since there was enough flow of water in Cauvery, people thronged Amma Mandapam bathing ghats from 4 am on Friday.

Hindu pundits said this year's Mahalaya Amavasya fell on October 4, and it was not only auspicious for praying for the liberation of the one's ancestors but also to dissolve one's ancestral karma, especially at the two famous places, namely, Srirangam and Rameshwaram. Hindus offer what is known as moon phase tarpanams to the departed ones in order to receive blessings in return from them. Hindus, particularly those who come to Amma Mandapam strongly believe that ancestors have a great impact on their mundane lives, and hence such pujas become necessary in direct to proportion to the accumulation of one's perceived sins. Hundreds of pilgrims, particularly those from the rural pockets of Trichy district made a beeline to the religiously significant Amma Manadapam road end, facing the main Rajagopuram of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Sri Rangam, on the bank of Cauvery to take a holy dip and then offer prayers to their beloved, departed forefathers. The town wore a festive look.

There were also a few men who ate 'Marn Choru' (eating rice served on the steps of Amma Mandapam) for the welfare of chief minister J Jayalalithaa. Though it was considered to be a political gimmick, they went ahead with their ritual of eating from the floor as they said they had taken a vow to pray for the continued good health of Amma at Amma Mandapam on an Amavasai day.
