AAI plans national strategy for airports development

State-owned AAI plans to have a national strategy for airports development and formulation of model concession agreements amid growing passenger traffic, which is expected to touch 322 million in 2018-19, according to its chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Pursuing ambitious expansion plans, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is preparing to commence "mega projects of new terminal buildings" at 14 aerodromes this year.

"AAI is deliberating on national strategy for airports development and operations and formulation of model concession agreements," Mohapatra told PTI in an interview.

In this regard, the national airports operator is already looking for a strategy consultant.

Against the backdrop of rising passenger numbers and infrastructure requirements, the AAI has been working on ways to increase its revenues from various sources.

During April-October 2017 period, the AAI chief said, the total number of passengers handled rose to 171 million compared to 149 million in the year-ago period.

"The passenger traffic in India is expected to be about 322 million in 2018-19," he noted.

While outlining the initiatives for this year, Mohapatra said "airports/ terminal buildings" are likely to be ready at five places. They are Jharsuguda in Odisha, Tezu (Arunachal Pradesh), Calicut (Kerala), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Pakyong (Sikkim).

This year, the "mega projects" of new terminal buildings are to start at Guwahati, Leh, Patna, Trichy, Vijayawada, Jabalpur, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Srinagar Pune, Lucknow, Mangalore, Dehradun and Jaipur, he added.

Besides, the AAI has a major role in readying airports under the regional connectivity scheme that seeks to unserved and under-served aerodromes as well as make flying more affordable.

To a query on proposed amendments to the AAI Act with respect to easing the restrictions on use of airport land, Mohapatra said it is under the consideration of the civil aviation ministry.

Poompuhar to beautify the interiors of TRZ International Airport at a cost of Rs 53 Lakhs

Quote:
Poompuhar’s products were patronised well by delegates taking part in an international conference held over three days at Indian Institute of Management-Tiruchi last week.

Several among the nearly 800 participants, including a good number of delegates from 18 countries invited for the 11th International ISDSI (Indian Subcontinent Decision Sciences Institute) 2018, visited the stalls put up by Poompuhar and placed orders.

In continuation of its initiatives to promote art works reflecting local culture, the Poompuhar will shortly be taking up a Rs. 53-lakh project for beautification of interiors of Tiruchi International Airport awarded by the Airports Authority of India. The beautification will be carried out by artisans specialising in painting and sculpting works.

Land acquisition for Tiruchi airport on course: Collector

Quote:
We will be able to hand over the land to AAI by the time it begins the project

The land acquisition process for the expansion of the Tiruchi airport was progressing swiftly, District Collector K. Rajamani said here on Thursday
.

The process of acquiring about 345.62 acres of land, including wet lands, for the expansion project began recently after the State government granted administrative sanction. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had sought about 683.32 acres of land, which included around 337.70 acres of Defence land.

The process of getting the Defence land is under way separately. Recently, the district administration started issuing notices to property owners whose lands are to be acquired amidst stiff resistance from a section of residents.

In an informal chat with reporters at Manachanallur near here, Mr.Rajamani said land acquisition work was well on course and the district administration would be able to hand over the land to AAI by the time they begin the project.
