21 super speciality posts filled up in Tiruchi GH

Quote:
They were recently sanctioned by the State government

The K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi, has filled up 21 super speciality posts, including eight professors, for various departments.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, G. Anitha, Dean of the college, said the posts were recently sanctioned by the State government to offer speciality treatments to patients.

New posts were sanctioned for the departments of neurology, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic, surgical oncology, medical oncology, nephrology and neo-natology. Barring one or two, most of the specialists had already reported for duty.

With the latest additions, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, which was attached with the medical college, would be able to provide super speciality treatment to the patients of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur. Highly critical and expensive surgeries, including cancer, could be done at the hospital with free of cost.

“Creation of new specialist posts is a boon to the general public of the region.

With the appointment of specialists, all six floors of the trauma care building and the available infrastructure will be fully used. Moreover, we are in a better position to perform rare and highly complicated surgeries,” Dr. Anitha said.

With 21 specialists, she said the number of faculty members of the hospital had gone up to 221.

Similarly, the number of beds in the hospital also had gone up to 1,598 with the addition of 400 beds in Reproductive Maternal Healthcare Building, which was inaugurated a few months ago.

Equipment acquired

The Dean said the hospital had also acquired various equipment to the tune of ₹4.5 crore including a 16-slice CT scan. There were 14 operation theatres in the hospital. All of them were upgraded with hydraulic operation tables. Anaesthesia work station, portable x-rays, ventilators and cell counters were among the new equipment. They were all purchased by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC). Six technicians were appointed for manning CT scan and other equipments.

She said the average occupancy rate of in-patient wards hovered around 95%, which was more than the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms. The hospital was getting about 3,000 outpatients daily. Efforts were being taken for optimum use of the Reproductive Maternal Healthcare unit.

New facility for cardiac patients at Tiruchi GH
Quote:

EECP will provide non-invasive treatment

The K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College has acquired Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) equipment for providing non-invasive treatment for patients with refractory cardiac failure.

Dean (in-charge) G. Anitha said that the equipment worth of Rs. 50 lakh has already been installed at the hospital.

Patients, who were not responding well after the angioplasty, patients who were not fit for surgery and patients with triple vessel disease with refractory failure could go in for the non-invasive treatment.

The treatment did not require hospital admission. A patient should undergo the treatment for 35 days. The patient had to spend one hour daily in the hospital. The treatment would increase the supply of blood to the heart.

The benefits can be observed between 15 and 20 days of the treatment. Decreased external dyspnoea and decreased anginal episode were among the benefits.

The patient could feel better within three weeks of the treatment, she added.

Dr. Anitha said the treatment would be effective for three to five years after undertaking 35 days therapy, which would be offered at the hospital shortly.

The procedure has been covered under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

Enlarged 7kg kidney removed from Malaysian and Twin Kidney Transplant on him at Appollo,Trichy

Quote:
The doctors at the Apollo Hospitals in Trichy performed a rare surgery to remove enlarged damaged kidneys of a male patient from Malaysia and transplant a donor kidney from his relative.

Tan Khaun, 35, from Malaysia was admitted to Apollo Hospitals here for kidney transplantation a week back. On evaluation, it was found that his kidneys were enlarged massively.

The rarity of the case was such that the doctors had to perform nephrectomy (removal of kidney) before transplantation. "The patient has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a condition in which the patient develops cysts, that is, water filled cavities in both the kidneys and damage them over the years," said a press statement from the hospital on Monday.

After Tan Khaun was deemed fit for the surgery, his kidneys were removed. The left kidney weighed 7kg and right weighed about 4.3kg as against the normal weight of 200-210gm for the left and 190-200gm for the right.

"It is a rare case because it is an inherited condition. In such a case, the kidneys should be removed before transplanting. He was put on dialysis after his kidneys were removed and till the kidney was received from the donor," said Dr Senthil Kumar, assistant medical director of medical services and hospital administration.

The hospital said that one of his relatives volunteered to donate his organ. The legal process for the organ donation got under way as per government regulations.

Apollo Hospitals, Trichy, claimed that it has state-of-the art infrastructure to perform all kinds of organ transplantation.
