DGP nod sought for new shooting range at KK Nagar

Quote:
At Armed Reserve Ground in Tiruchi

The Tiruchi police commissionerate has sought permission of the Director General of Police (DGP) to set up a new shooting range at the Armed Reserve ground in K.K. Nagar.

Speaking to The Hindu , A. Amalraj, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, said there was a need to create infrastructure in Tiruchi for the youngsters to take shooting as a sport. Customised training on air rifle, rifle and pistol should be given to young shooters. With the aim of creating all infrastructures, a new shooting range would be established at AR ground. A proposal had been sent to the DGP for permission.

Mr. Amalraj said it would be a 50-metre-range and have 20 targets.

At a time, 50 persons could undergo training. “The proposed facility will be a much needed boost to shooters,” he said.

Double laurel for Tiruchi college in hockey

It was double delight for Jamal Mohamed College and Khajamian Higher Secondary School in the Unified Tiruchi District Hockey (UTDH) league for 2017-18.

Jamal Mohamed College won the men’s and women’s titles, while Khajamian Higher Secondary School emerged the winner in the schools league for boys and kiddies’ league (under-14 boys).

A total of 25 teams participated in the men’s event. The teams were split into four pools and the topper of each pool qualified for the super league. Jamal Mohamed College, Central Zone Police, and Sports Hostel were tied for the top spot, with a win and two draws each, at the end of the super league.

However, Jamal Mohamed College with a superior goal difference was adjudged winner. Central Zone Police finished runner-up.

In the women’s category, Jamal Mohamed College and Kongunadu College of Engineering and Technology finished with four wins and a draw each at the end of the six-team league. But the former with a better goal difference was declared winner.

Meanwhile, R.C. Higher Secondary School finished runner-up in both the schools league and kiddies’ league.

At the valedictory function here recently, A. Mohamed Yunus, chairman, M.I.E.T. Institutions, and M. Renukalakshmi, general secretary, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, gave away the prizes in the presence of K. Pari, patron, UTDH.

It is euphoria as chess players meet one of the greatest

Anand inaugurates championship for physically challenged

After having waited with bated breath, the audience erupted in euphoria the moment chess great Viswanathan Anand made his way into the hall at the Pavendar Bharathidasan College of Engineering and Technology on Thursday.

Chess enthusiasts, including participants of the second physically disabled national individual chess championship, were thrilled to be in the midst of the five-time world champion. Mr. Anand was here to inaugurate the championship, organised by the Chess Federation for Physical Disabled (CFPD).

Among the audience was K. Jennitha Anto, reigning women’s champion in the IPCA (International Physically disabled Chess Association) world individual chess championship, who Mr. Anand lauded.

“Normally when someone refers to a five-time champion, I will stand up. But here I have to pause as there is another five-time champion around,” he said referring to Ms. Anto’s achievement of winning five straight IPCA championships.

“I have always felt that chess is a wonderful game for people with challenges because it is very easy to play. Once you start playing, then you are competing under the same conditions as everybody else,” said Mr. Anand, adding that the formation of CFPD was a “very big step.”

“You should enjoy the game so much that you should forget the world while playing. I hope you enjoy this tournament,” he said.

Mr. Anand and R.A. Krishnakumar, Executive Director, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd, honoured differently abled chess players who won laurels in the IPCA championships in 2016 A. M. Raman, Advisor, Saraswathi Educational and Health Trust, was also present.

Mr. Anand enthusiastically posed for photographs with the players. “I am meeting Mr. Anand for the first time and it is hugely inspiring. I am so happy and thrilled,” said Suresh Agarwal, who is competing in the championship.

Around 40 players from different parts of the country are participating in the four-day championship.
