1) Corporation gets 40 more vehicles to help in waste management

A sum of ₹2 crore has been spent for acquiring the vehicles

In an effort to improve the efficiency of solid waste management, the Tiruchi City Corporation has acquired 40 more light motor vehicles.

A sum to the tune of ₹2 crore has been spent for acquiring the vehicles with the financial assistance of Swachch Bharat Mission-2016-17.

Minister for Tourism Vellamandi N. Natarajan flagged off the vehicles in the presence of Minister for Backward Classes and Minority Welfare, S. Valarmathi at a function held at the Corporation here on Sunday.

Mr. Natarajan said the vehicles would bring positive results in solid waste management in the city.

The residents have a greater role in improving the efficiency of solid waste management.

The residents’ welfare associations, civic activists, commercial establishments and educational institutions should extend cooperation with the civic body in maintaining the city neat and clean.

N. Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer, said that the new vehicles would be allotted to the micro compost yards in different parts of the city to enable collection of bio-degradable and non-degradable waste from the households to the nearby yards.

It was estimated that the vehicles would collect garbage from at least 60,000 households in the city per day.

About 126 metric tonne of garbage would be collected daily.

He said the scheme being implemented by the Corporation on collecting non-degradable waste on every Wednesday had received good patronage among the residents, commercial establishments, hotels, restaurants and others. The new vehicles would improve the scheme further.

2) Efforts on to Decentralize Ariyamangalam Yard

Quote:
The Trichy Corporation has procured 40 additional light motor vehicles (LMVs) for segregated waste collection. The move will allow civic body workers to reach houses in the interior parts of the city with ease. These houses are often missed as they are located inside narrow lanes.
The LMVs will also save time and help sanitary workers reach more houses daily.

According to the city corporation, the additional 40 LMVs will help micro compost units receive double the waste received. With this, the number of LMVs in the corporation fleet has gone up to 85. The civic body has planned to procure another 70 more vehicles in the next three months.

Each vehicle on an average can cover a minimum of 1,500 households in a day. The city would require a fleet strength of 125 vehicles to cover all the 2.30 lakh households in the city.

Micro compost units were raised in 13 wards in the city with an aim to decentralize waste management by preventing waste generated in the city from reaching the Ariyamangalam dumping yard. Women self-help groups were trained in door-to-door collection of waste, which were recycled in the micro-compost units.

The 13 micro compost units process 130 tonnes of waste daily, out of 450 tonnes of waste generated in the city.

Corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said that seven more micro compost units will be ready in a few weeks. A proposal has been sent to the state government seeking funds for raising nine more units to take the total to 29.

"Once all the 29 units are ready, we can eliminate 95 per cent of garbage reaching the Ariyamangalam dumping yard and recycle the waste in the respective wards from where it is generated," he said.
