MoU signed to prepare students for competitive exams

The District Central Library has started implementing its plan for tie-ups with colleges to enable students to prepare for UPSC and other competitive examinations even while pursuing their courses.

Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the District Central Library and Holy Cross College for sharing of resources and expertise.

The library will utilise the expertise of the college faculty and the students will derive the benefit of library's resources. The library was keen to enter into similar tie-ups with other colleges also, District Library Officer A. P. Sivakumar said.

The District Central Library has been subscribing to newspapers and periodicals that are helpful for students to prepare for the competitive examinations. It has a separate section for Competitive Examinations where candidates appearing for the various examinations conducted by UPSC, TNPSC, Railway Recruitment Board, BSRB, Teachers' Recruitment Board, UGC and other entities, derive utility of the vast collection of books in various disciplines.

Alongside having tie-ups with colleges, the District Central Library was also in the process of deriving utility of the National Mission on Libraries. The National Mission on Libraries was established in 2012 by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in pursuance of National Knowledge Commission recommendations for sustained attention for development of Libraries and Information Science Sector.

The scheme consists of four components: Creation of National Virtual Library of India (NVLI), setting up of NML Model Libraries, Quantitative and Qualitative Survey of Libraries, and Capacity Building. The mission seeks to put in place a world class system that disseminates information, fosters reading habits and facilitates research work.

Quote:
Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, will be the chief guest of the 13th convocation of National Institute of Technology-T on Saturday, according to its director Mini Shaji Thomas.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, she said Mr. Murthy was one of the brilliant minds of the country and his visit would be a milestone in the history of NIT. His presence would motivate the students.

His vast experience in the Information and Technology would be immensely beneficial to the students. He would also inaugurate gold jubilee convention hall, she added.

Later, Mr. Murthy would lay the foundation stone for a new building to commemorate the golden jubilee of Chemical Engineering Department and interact with the students.

Ms. Thomas said that it had been decided to confer the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) on N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, TATA Sons. He was an alumnus of NIT (formerly Regional Engineering College). The senate of NIT was unanimous in its decision to confer honorary doctorate on Chandrasekaran.

He was the second person to receive the honorary doctorate next only to NIT’s (then REC) founding Principal Professor Manisundaram.

She said 1,649 students, including 46 B.Arch, 814 B.Tech, 663 M.Tech, 71 MSc, 88 MCA, 46 MBA, 37 M.S. (by research) students and 85 doctorates, would receive the degrees in the 13th convocation.

Amrith Rajagopal Setlur of B.Tech, (Computer Science and Engineering) and Yashvi Singh of B.Tech (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering) would receive the President’s Medal for overall highest Cumulative Grade Point Average.

Institute medals would be presented to nine B.Tech, one B.Arch, 22 M.Tech, three MSc, one MCA and one MBA students.

On filling up of faculty positions, which were lying vacant for so long, Ms. Thomas said the NIT council had recently framed new rules for recruitment of faculty members. It had been approved also. A few queries had to be addressed on it.

Steps would be taken to begin the recruitment process shortly.

She added that a new M.Tech. programme on Data Analytics had recently been launched.

Consequent to the successful completion of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) phase I and II, TEQIP III had been sanctioned.

It was a proud moment for all NIT-T graduates that the institute had won the prestigious CII-AICTE best industry linked institute competing among IITs, NITs and IIITs.

The institute also received national level awards from FICCI for social excellence and employability and from ASSOCHAM for best Institute to use ICT tools, the Principal said.

2) TATA Sons chairman to get honorary doctorate from NIT-T

Quote:
The National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-T), will honour Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran by conferring him with a honorary doctorate at the 13th convocation of NIT-T in the presence of Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy on Saturday, who is the chief guest for the event.

The two industry giants will spend the whole day at NIT-T campus and interact with the students of the institute apart from attending various other events.

Chandrasekaran is the second man to be honoured with a honorary doctorate by NIT Trichy (earlier known as Regional Engineering College). Founder of the institution, P S Mani Sundaram, was the only one to be conferred with the honour so far by NIT-T.

Chandrasekaran was conferred with the 'Distinguished Alumni Award' by NIT-T in 2014 when he visited the institute.

While justifying the decision which was acknowledged by the NIT board and the government, Mini Shaji Thomas, director of NIT-T, said that it was a proud moment for NIT-T to have its alumnus occupy the chair occupied by someone like J R D Tata, the former chairman of Tata group.

Chandrasekaran will also inaugurate a golden jubilee convention hall at NIT-T having a seating capacity for 5,000 people.

Mini Shaji said that NIT-T continues in the top 31 of the national institutional ranking framework (NIRF) list in the country. "Now we have put in a five year strategic plan to break into the top engineering institutions in the country by critically analysing NIRF data," she said.

The new flexible curriculum implemented at NIT-T has been recommended by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as a model one for NITs. The senate of the institute has endorsed the introduction of flexible curriculum, minor specialisations and flipped classrooms based on course plans and new evaluation models.

This year, a record 1,649 students will be graduating from the institution, including 46 BArch, 663 MTech, 71 MSc, 88 MCA, 46 MBA, 37 MS (by research) students and 85 doctorates.

NIT is also among the very few institutions which has signed an MOU with the National Academic Depository (NAD) launched by the union government for safe keeping of document and verification. Every institutions has been asked to become a member. This year's degrees of students will be uploaded on the NAD site. It will be available for graduates and industry for verification.

Quote:
National Institute of Technology Trichy (NIT-T) has announced the launch of a new M Tech programme on Data Analytics from this academic year. NIT-Trichy is the first NIT to start a PG programme on Data Analytics which is said to have vast scope in every domain.

The course will be offered by the department of computer applications as an interdisciplinary, which will be supported by the departments of computer science and management studies.

Recently, there is an exponential rise in the importance of analytics, in organisations for various reasons. The significance is seen in domains such as healthcare, business, financial forms, consumer goods manufacturing etc. In this view, the department of computer applications has started the new programme.

"The course is designed by getting inputs from industries and academicians to suit the needs of industries as well as for carrying out research," according to director of NIT-T, Dr Mini Saji Thomas.

Volume of data is pumped in from different sources including business trade, banking and agriculture and there is every need for people to use the data in proper form.

"Analytics is important and plays a major role in managing this data and make proper decision out of it," said head, department of computer applications, S R Balasundaram, adding that data analytics is nothing but a combination of statistics, computer science and business as such.

Data analytics was added as a subject a decade ago in NIT while making changes in the syllabus of the MCA programme, he said.

"There are good number of institutions in the country offering similar data analytics courses but we decided to start an exclusive three-year M Tech course to focus on all subjects related to data analytics," Balasundaram added.
