Lack of amenities hurts Puliyancholai as footfall increases

However, later it was decided to convert it into a zoological park and zoos across the country were requested to send in their surplus animals. After various rounds of deliberations, it was decided to restrict the area to 30 hectares in 2014 and work started with the sanctioning of Rs 2.4 crore to create basic infrastructure.

A senior official from the forest department told TOI that the zoological park had been designed to have 17 types of amenities at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore. Demarcation of boundaries, fencing, entrance arch, pictorial sign boards, water facilities through borewells and an overhead tank with a capacity of 24,000 litres were established in the first phase. Besides, four enclosures to accommodate wild animals has also been created.

"While the work got over a few weeks ago, the next phase would only start after the state government sanctions funds for the second phase," said the official. He said that the entire design was to be carried out in a circular pattern with the enclosures located on the circumference and the visitors will be viewing the animals from the centre in a circular pattern.
Each of the enclosures is being designed in such a way for the animals to adapt to the surroundings and climate, he added. The zoo will have veterinary centres, watchtowers, canteens, parking lots and other commercial establishments to cater to the citizens.

Bicycle track opened at Green Park

Quote:
Taking the first steps towards making Green Park at Panchappur functional, a bicycle track has been opened at the park.

Corporation commissioner N Ravichandran unveiled the track on Tuesday evening.

The Green park project was started in March 2013 with a grant of Rs 1.5 crore from the state government. It was estimated to be completed by June 2014. However, it failed to meet the deadline and was opened only last year.

To make the facility one-of-its-kind in the state, video game avenues, meditation hall, zoology park and even a toy train facility were added as part of its core infrastructure. However, these facilities are yet to see the light of the day due to the lack of funds.

While the park has been open for the past few months, it hasn't seen much footfall due to its location on the outskirts of the city.

The opening of the bicycle track is seen as a measure to popularise the park among the residents of the city. The 1km-long track has been raised at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs. A total 10 bicycles have been placed at the park, including three for children. Visitors can use the cycles free-of-cost.

Ravichandran said the bicycle track is the first step towards popularising the park which has been developed at a cost of over Rs 2.5crore.

"We have placed work order for the construction of an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of over 300. This apart we are planning for a circular footpath covering the entire park for the walkers in the upcoming days."
