The Lagaan that was played out in Trichy

Quote:
The P R Thevar Trophy that will kick off on Friday at Trichy will see budding cricketers putting up their best fights to prove their mettle for future stints. Around 31 district teams affiliated to Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) will participate in the tournament which will be held in different districts across the state. But, even as the TNCA’s interdistrict under-16 cricket tournament enters its 53rd year, not many know about the man after whom it is named.

It was P Ratnavel Thevar, the chairman of Trichy municipality who introduced cricket in Trichy . In an answer to the British, who had prohibited entry of Indians to the English Club in Trichy -a privileged sanctuary where Englishmen and women indulged in leisure activities including cricket -Thevar founded the Trichinopoly United Cricket Club (TUCC) in December 1914.

“It was the first cricket club in the town. Its name was inspired by the Madras united club which had pioneered Indian cricket in Madras,“ says Thevar’s grandson T Ratnavelu Thevar, also a leg break bowler like his grandfather who represented the district in the PR Thevar Trophy inter-district schools tournament.

Initially the club used the vacant site behind the old Imperial Bank (now the State Bank of India, head office) to conduct matches. “Later when P R Thevar became the municipal chariman he set apart nearly 10 acres of land for a fine cricket ground. He also built the municipal recreation and sporting club which was used as a pavilion for TUCC,“ says R Kannan, a cricket enthusiast in Trichy.

P R Thevar conducted many festival matches, the most important being the Indian-European annual fixtures.

Trichy residents relived some of these matches when the Hindi movie `Lagaan’ was released. Some of the matches were The Sri Lankan Cricket team frequently played matches at TUCC ground in Trichy .

“He arranged the tour for TUCC to Ceylon in 1938 and 1948 by spending from his own pocket. In Ceylon TUCC played many matches against the Tamil union, colleges and clubs like Moorse Sports Club, Sinhalese Sports Club and Nondescript Club,“ says Ratnavelu.

He says it was also PR Thevar who conceived the idea of city-district matches in order to bring budding talents in other district to the notice of cricket authorities in Madras. The first city-district matches were played in 1937 at MUC grounds in Madras and the return matches have been played in the district headquarters by rotation ever since.
