The 100-pillar Sri Jayanti Mantapam has been resurrected

Heritage buffs should be cheered by the latest development at the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple. The encroachments around the 100-pillar Sri Jayanti mantapam have been removed and the magnificent hall has been restored.

The four corners around Aali Nadan Thiruchutru (fourth prakaram) of the temple have 100-pillar mantapams. The south-west corner mantapam is called Thirukottaram, north-west is Therthakarai Vasudeva Perumal shrine, in the north-east corner near Chandrapushkarani is Kothandaramar shrine and the south-east corner mantapam is Sri Jayanthi mantapam, where Lord Ranganatha arrives during Krishna Jayanthi for Thirumanjanam and other rituals.

In a state of disrepair

Used as madappalli and for miscellaneous purposes, the hall had been in a state of neglect for 50 years (Picture below). About nine feet of earth had closed around the base and the vacant land on the southern side had been filled with fire wood, ash, rubbish, etc. With drainage water stagnating it was an eyesore and health hazard.

Visiting the area, the HR & CE commissioner and officials of the ASI issued orders for the restoration of the mantapam, a stone structure. The place has been cleared of debris, the earth covering the base removed to reveal the pillars in their original state of splendour.

Team from UNESCO inspects Srirangam temple

Image

A team from UNESCO, which has set out on a fact-finding mission to ascertain the state of renovations and other aspects in temples across the State, inspected the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple on Monday.

Accompanied by a senior official from the Archaeological Survey of India and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE), the three-member team spent nearly three hours going around the sprawling temple complex.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had ordered the HR&CE Department to take the assistance of UNESCO to ensure that the heritage value of the temples are protected. Official sources said the team inspected the ongoing work as well as those completed during renovation. The team was shown old photographs and the recent ones as well as documents by the HR&CE officials.

Meanwhile, Rangarajan Narasimhan, one of the petitioners who had levelled various charges with respect to the renovation of the Srirangam temple before the Madras High Court alleged that he was denied entry into the temple by the HR&CE officials during the inspection by the team. Mr. Rangarajan told The Hindu that he had accompanied the UNESCO team as an observer during inspections in other temples but was disallowed from doing so at the Srirangam temple. He alleged that the temple officials heckled and pushed him around, which the latter denied.

Subsequently, he was allowed inside the temple after mediapersons arrived, at the spot but was not allowed to be present at a meeting held by the UNESCO team inside the temple.

“The team members have asked me to accompany them tomorrow,” Mr. Rangarajan said.

Mr. Rangarajan was told by the UNESCO team that it would call him if his presence was required, the officials maintained.
