Bicycle track opened at Green Park

Quote:
Taking the first steps towards making Green Park at Panchappur functional, a bicycle track has been opened at the park.

Corporation commissioner N Ravichandran unveiled the track on Tuesday evening.

The Green park project was started in March 2013 with a grant of Rs 1.5 crore from the state government. It was estimated to be completed by June 2014. However, it failed to meet the deadline and was opened only last year.

To make the facility one-of-its-kind in the state, video game avenues, meditation hall, zoology park and even a toy train facility were added as part of its core infrastructure. However, these facilities are yet to see the light of the day due to the lack of funds.

While the park has been open for the past few months, it hasn't seen much footfall due to its location on the outskirts of the city.

The opening of the bicycle track is seen as a measure to popularise the park among the residents of the city. The 1km-long track has been raised at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs. A total 10 bicycles have been placed at the park, including three for children. Visitors can use the cycles free-of-cost.

Ravichandran said the bicycle track is the first step towards popularising the park which has been developed at a cost of over Rs 2.5crore.

"We have placed work order for the construction of an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of over 300. This apart we are planning for a circular footpath covering the entire park for the walkers in the upcoming days."

A blueprint will soon be drawn to promote Pachamalai hills as a popular eco-tourism destination by involving the Tourism and Forest Departments, said Collector K. Rajamani.

Accompanied by District Forest Officer N. Satheesh, he visited different parts of Pachamalai hills, situated about 80 km from Tiruchi on Wednesday, to take stock of the eco-tourism potential and the entertainment and basic facilities for tourists and trekkers. Both the officials held a detailed discussion at Top Sengattupatti, where the forest department has built five treetop houses with fibre components and a dormitory.

“Pachamalai is not far from Tiruchi and it is the only hill station in Tiruchi district. It is a top biodiversity destination in the region with rich flora and fauna coupled with moderate temperature. It can be converted into a popular tourist destination with a focus on eco-tourism,” said Mr. Rajamani.

He said that a botanical garden, a park with playing equipment for children, musical fountain, swimming pool and tourist friendly facilities could be established in the hills.

Similarly, there was a need to identify sight seeing spots and trekking zones to entertain tourists.

A blueprint would soon be drawn taking into account the views of tourists and also have inputs from experts. The blueprint would have details on the number of tourists, estimated tourists in the near future, areas to be developed and various other factors.

Mr. Satheesh said the Forest Department had recently constructed five treetop houses and a dormitory as part of an eco tourism project. They were being rented out for tourists.

Moreover, arrangements have also been made to provide traditional food to tourists with locally available ingredients.

Pachamalai turning into a popular eco-tourism destination in Trichy

Quote:
The lesser-known hill station Pachamalai in the central district has been attracting a lot of tourists after it was developed into an eco-tourism destination.

There has been a good response for the newly-developed treetop houses on Pachamalai Hills which were added by the forest department. About 225 tourists, mainly from Chennai, used the facility during the peak summer season.

Located about 80km from Trichy, this low lying mountain range in the Eastern Ghats is slowly making its presence known with improved infrastructure.

Five treetop houses built with fibre components can hold a maximum of four people each. Exclusive vehicles to transport the visitors along the hills are also being arranged.

Ready to accommodate tourists for the first time after completion of work this summer, 83 tourists visited in April and another 142 tourists visited during June. A total of Rs 90,000 was generated as revenue in the two months alone and will go towards maintenance of the facility and welfare of the local community.

An eco-tourism committee has been formed comprising members of top Sengattupatti and Sembur villages who get employment out of the tourism activities.

An Erode-based businessman, K Mohan Kumar, who visited the place along with wife and two children a few days ago, was impressed with the warm hospitality of the local community. "It was indeed a memorable stay, away from the usual tourist spots and remains to be explored," says Mohan, who trekked Pachamalai for two days with the guidance of the locals.

"The local food with varieties of greens endemic to this region was delicious apart from the herbal tea that had a unique taste," he said while lauding the knowledge of forest personnel who assisted them all through the trek.

District forest officer N Satheesh said that the lesser known hill station in Trichy will be further developed in the future to attract more tourists. "It also gives a sense of satisfaction to the tourists for being able to contribute to the development of the local community," he said.

"Revenue generated from the facility would also be used to give community loans to locals in the upcoming months," he added.
