Road to Vayalur Temple looks Spick and Span after Collector's efforts

Image

Quote:
Visitors to the Vayalur Murugan Temple in the city were pleasantly surprised to find the road leading to the temple from Somarasampettai spick and span over the past few days.

For several years now, a foul odour used to hang over the stretch due to unchecked dumping of garbage along the road side and open defecation.

The unhygienic conditions prevailing along the road was highlighted in the columns of The Hindu recently. Acting on the report, Collector K. Rajamani, who took charge about a month ago, directed the civic authorities to stop the garbage dumping and also clean the road.

Besides clearing the mounds of garbage, the civic authorities have also put up a fence to prevent open defecation and urination, much to the relief of visiting devotees. “The practice of dumping waste persisted for decades despite our repeated representations. We thank the Collector for the prompt action,” said Puliyur A.Nagarajan, a resident of the area.

The eight new yards would process about 63 tonnes of garbage a day

Buoyed by the success of its initiative to open micro compost yards to micro manage solid waste collection and disposal, the Tiruchi City Corporation has opened eight more such facilities in the city.

In order to decentralise the solid waste management and to avoid dumping of waste at a centralised location without segregation, the civic body had set up its first micro compost yard at Pookkollai near Ariyamangalam about a year ago on a pilot basis.

Since it proved to be a success, two more compost yards were set up at Konakkarai in Srirangam and Birds Road in Cantonment.

The scheme has now been extended to eight more places in the city at a cost of ₹3.77 crore
. Tourism Minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan and Backward Classes and Minority Welfare Minister S. Valarmathi inaugurated the new compost yards at a function held at the Corporation lorry shed in the city on Sunday.

Member of Parliament P. Kumar, Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer N. Ravichandran and senior officials participated in it.

Mr. Ravichandran said that the micro compost yards set up at Oyyamari, Drainage Street in ward 3 in Srirangam, Viragupettai, Kuppankulam, Kamaraj Nagar and Vamadam would start function immediately. Services of 134 Self Help Groups would be involved in the operation of micro compost yards.

A total of 21 vehicles would be used for collecting garbage from the residents and business establishments of targeted wards.

The SHG members would segregate waste into bio-degradable and non-degradable.

The bio-degradable waste would be used as a main raw material for producing organic manure.

He said the new compost yards would process about 63 tonnes of garbage per day. As many as 1.60 lakh residents living in 34,500 households would be covered in the extended scheme.

Similarly, eight more micro compost yards would be set up in the town.

Construction works had already begun and they would be brought into operation within two to three months.

Do it right and walk away with a gold coin on Wednesdays

Gold winner: T. Selvamani, the first city resident to win a gold coin on Wednesday.

Quote:
Winner will be selected by draw of lots

City residents segregating their household garbage into degradable and non-degradable waste stand a chance to win gold coins henceforth.

The Tiruchi Corporation, which recently launched an ambitious programme aimed at source segregation of solid wastes in the city, will now give away a gold coin every week in an attempt to provide an incentive to residents to adhere to the system
.

Since June 5, the Corporation had made it mandatory for city residents and traders to segregate biodegradable and non-degradable wastes at source. It had notified new rules which provides for levying penalties on residents and commercial establishments that fail to comply. However, the civic body had refrained from imposing penalities.

The Corporation has started collecting non-degradable solid wastes exclusively on Wednesdays. Collection of non-degradable wastes has been gradually increasing since the launch of the programme.

This week, about 90.16 tonnes of non-degradable waste was collected in the city. However, the city is to achieve full compliance.

Meanwhile, the Corporation has announced that gold coins would be awarded to one resident, who comply with the system, every week.

The winner would be selected through draw of lots every week. “We hope this will serve as an encouragement and spur more residents to segregate their waste at source.

The gold coins are sponsored by Mangal & Mangal Thanga Maligai, a city jeweller. We plan to run the reward scheme for a year,” said Corporation Commissioner N.Ravichandran after the first draw of lot on Wednesday. The first gold coin was won by Selvamani of Valluvar Nagar in ward 12.

Residents, who hand over non-degradable waste separately to sanitary workers, are required to send photographs of the same to the notified Whatsapp number 8489444400. They must also mention their address and mobile phone numbers.

A computerised draw of lots of the entries would be held every Wednesday evening and the lucky winner could walk away with the prize the same day.
