Child care facility remains unutilised

Quote:
Delay in creating posts of doctors, nurses at K.A.P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital

More than two months have passed since Chief Minister Edapaddi K. Palaniswami declared open the newly-built Reproductive Maternal New Born Child Care building at K.A.P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital. However, it is yet to be brought to use due to delay in posting doctors, nurses and paramedical staff members.

The building, constructed at a cost of Rs. 20 crore, has 298 beds specifically to offer services on reproductive health care, mother and child care.

Exclusive centre

The exclusive reproductive health care building is said to be the first of its kind in this part of the region in government hospitals. It was constructed to offer exclusive on breast health care, women health care, reproductive health issues, pre and post pregnancy issues, hormonal conditions, ovarian issues and infertility. It was aimed at offering mother and child care services to the patients of Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur.

The construction of the building was started about four and half years ago. It was declared ready for inauguration about six months ago. However, the building was inaugurated by Chief Minister in the second week of March. But, it has not been put to use still now.

Informed sources told The Hindu that the delay was due to issues over creating posts of doctors, nurses and other para medical staff members to the Reproductive Maternal New Born Child Care. Though the issue had been taken to the notice of senior officials of the Health Department, doctors and nurses were yet to be posted in sufficient number.

It requires at least three teams to provide round the clock medical services to patients. Besides gynaecologists, anaesthetists and other supporting staff were also needed to be posted for doing surgeries.

Similarly, the instruments and furniture for the Reproductive Maternal New Born Child Care have not been provided.

A senior official said the issue had been taken to the State government. The building would be brought to use immediately after posting of at least minimum medical personnel. Sincere efforts were taken to get necessary instruments and furniture as quickly as possible.

Life-saving device in Sri Ranganathar temple to help heart patients

Image

Quote:
An automatic external defibrillator (AED), a life-saving equipment which identifies erratic heart beat leading to cardiac arrest and saves the person by giving a shock was installed at Sri Ranganathar temple at Srirangam by a Trichy-based cardiologist on Friday.

With the installation of the AED at Garuda Mandapam in the temple, visitors who suffer a heart attack will be able to get immediate attention.

The primary purpose of installing an AED outside the hospital was to enable even a non-medical person to operate the device by applying the sticker pads on the chest of the patient. The assisting person only needs to follow the commands given by the AED machine to save the life of that person by giving a shock.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops working leading to cessation of blood supply to various parts of the body. During this period the person becomes unconscious with no pulse. Cardiac arrest occurs due to an erratic fast heart beat (ventricular fibrillation).

"If the erratic fast heart beat causing the cardiac arrest can be identified at the right time, this abnormal rhythm can be normalised. Since cardiac arrest can occur for any person anywhere at any time, it is essential to have this AED device at public places outside the hospital," said cardiologist Dr Senthil Kumar who set up the machine.

Kumar said he is also planning to set up another AED at Srirangam railway station which is frequented by senior citizens to board trains. Four more places are also being identified to install the device.
