We plan to take OneWay.Cab pan-India in four months: Vivek Kejriwal

After getting $450,000 of funding from Indian Angel Network, Ahmedabad-based OneWay.Cab, a single-way taxi service provider, launched services in Kolkata, Kanpur, Agra, Lucknow, Asansol, Durgapur, etc. Co-founder and CEO of OneWayCab, Vivek Kejriwal, in coversation with Ateeq Shaikh, speaks about the two-year-old journey and the way forward for the start-up to expand its inter-city cab hailing aggregation business in South India.

When did OneWayCab take off? What were the initial challenges?
We started in January 2015, with cabs doing city operations in Vadodara and Ahmedabad. Back then, Ola and Uber were not present in the city and came only a year later. During our business tenure, we figured out that when a passenger travels one way inter-city, s/he even has to pay a return fare, which even we were charging. That’s where the actual idea emerged and we piloted the idea in Vadodara and Ahmedabad. Later, we ran in unorganised markets like Mumbai-Pune and Delhi-Chandigarh. As one way fare was totally unheard of, the challenges too were different. Earlier, it was a learning experience, now we can open a new inter-city route with ease.

What’s your expansion plan?
We want to have a pan-India presence and are in full-fledged expansion mode. We have already made our presence in the western as well as northern regions in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In southern India, it will be a different challenge due to language-related issues, which we will eventually overcome. In next two months, we will move to south India starting with Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Trichy, Hyderabad, etc. In another four months, we are looking for pan-India presence.

Revival and Beautification of Sengulam Tank---A Model Initiative

The initiative is aimed at improving the water table

If everything goes well, it is going to be an important and welcome initiative in the district to de-silt the public tank with the participation of private and self motivated people. In an attempt to save Sengulam tank, a lifeline of farmers of K. Sathanur and an important groundwater recharge source for many residential colonies in K. K. Nagar, the residents and various welfare associations of the city have joined together to take up the project.

Under the banner of “Save Sengulam and Restore Sengulam” movement, residents of K. Sathanur, members of various organisations including Readers’ Circle, Makkal Mandram, Marumalarchi Mandram, Tiruchi Trekkers, Welfare Associations, All Department Pensioners Association, Vilva Eswarar Trust, real estate owners and others have joined together for the common cause. They discussed ways and means to tap resources for the project at a meeting held at K. Sathanur on Sunday. They have unanimously chosen M. S. Ramalingam to lead the initiative.

As per the initiative, the project will be implemented in two phases. Clearing bushes, deepening, desilting and strengthening bunds are part of the first phase.

It is estimated that it will cost ₹.5 lakh. Formation of footpath for two kilometers around the tank, installation of street lights, planting and nurturing rare species, creation of habitat for birds and beautification are among the components of the second phase. It is said that it may require more than ₹1 crore.

“It is heartening to note that several self motivated residents, businessmen, working and retired people have volunteered to contribute for the project. We want to transform Sengulam tank as a model in Tiruchi district,” says S. Nambirajan, secretary of the movement.

Since it requires huge amount of money, it would be taken to the notice of the concerned authorities including the Collector, he added.

The tank, measuring 15.92 hectares, gets water from Mettu Kattalai canal that branches from the Cauvery river.

The initiative is aimed at improving the water table in the areas surrounding K. Sathanur, Kalinga Nagar, Ayyappa Nagar, Ayyar thottam and several residential colonies of K. K. Nagar.

New aggregator hopes to cash in on driver discontent

Quote:
Cab customers may be in for some more pampering as there is a new kid on the block.

'Qik', the latest entrant, promises to be a 'driver-centric' app, junking the commission system which is a major bone of contention between existing cab aggregators and drivers.

"The aggregator model is a clear failure in India. Cab companies started with many incentives but could not sustain them over a period of time. It has left drivers who are working 18-20 hours a day dissatisfied, with 30% of their earnings going away as commission," says city-based Joseph Kamalesh, co-founder of TenZillion Cabs along with Suvro Ghosh.

The company will be launching the new app in the city next month before launching it in other cities in the state like Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Salem.

Qik will work on a subscription basis, by which drivers pay a monthly fee to the company and take home whatever is earned through the day without having to part with commission fees.

"We will also be fitting in IoT (Internet of Things) enabled services to check the engines, oil and emissions, besides which drivers will be entitled to medical insurance and legal aid for a nominal monthly fee," adds Joseph.
The app aims at roping in Ola and Uber drivers in the city who, under the banner of the 'Friends Drivers Welfare Association of TN', have been protesting the alleged unfair practices of aggregators and demanding a standard per kilometer fare.

"Current cab pricing may be convenient for passengers, but comes at a big cost for drivers who have families to feed. We hope our tie-up with Qik will get us out of the tangle of dynamic pricing, and the steep number of rides we have to clock in daily," says Tamil Arasu, president of the association.

The company will also provide women with safety features on the app, through panic buttons and combination hard keys that will send alerts to the nearest police station and nearby cabs
