Lack of shelter causes hardship to travellers at Srirangam Railway Station

Image
Absence of seating arrangements and platform shelter at Srirangam railway station causes hardship to passengers.

Quote:
Srirangam falls under ‘D’ category station with provision of minimum amenities”

Absence of platform shelter in substantial portion of the Srirangam railway station is causing difficulty to rail travellers.

The problem is acutely felt by senior citizens boarding and alighting at Srirangam. Passengers boarding from the station feel this handicap during afternoon hours having to stand either under the scorching sun or to take refuge under the shade of the subway roof on platform 2.

Many trains including some superfast expresses have halts at this station where shelter is provided only to restricted portions on platforms 1 and 2 where incoming and outgoing trains are accommodated.

Considerable portion of the platforms are bereft of shelter forcing passengers to stay put in the covered area and rush towards their respective coaches upon arrival of train. The problem is felt more during peak summer or during sudden downpour.

With mercury level beginning to soar and the intense heat expected to last for the next few months, passengers feel that the railway administration should take urgent steps to provide shelter in uncovered portion as well. Residents say the aged passengers and those travelling with children feel the hardship.

The platform shelters are confined only to limited portion, says Ananthapadmabhan, a resident of Srirangam and a frequent traveller.

Coupled with this issue is the lack of coach indication boards on platform 2 and 3 where long distance trains are accommodated. This also causes difficulty to passengers as they have to rush to their respective coaches given the short duration of halt of trains, say travellers. The new platform constructed at Srirangam as part of the ongoing track doubling work has been provided shelter only to a restricted portion as well with the remaining area uncovered.

Travellers feel the issue should be resolved at the earliest since Srirangam was attracting devotees from all corners of the country. Railway officials say Srirangam falls under the ‘D’ category station with provision of minimum amenities. It is felt by travellers that there should be no restrictions for any improvements as sought in view of the increase in passenger traffic.

New railway line gets clearance

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, has cleared operation of traffic on the newly laid electrified double line from Vriddhachalm to Mathur.

He inspected the 28-km stretch early this month for two days. He had conducted a high-speed trial by travelling on board a special train to examine the stability of the new second line. A top official from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL)said the clearance was given to operate trains at a speed of 95 km an hour.

Officials say some final works relating to engineering, signalling and electrification were being carried out. Yard modelling works were under way. Some of the old points and crossing in that stretch would be removed and new points and crossings inserted.

The existing broad gauge railway line would be cut and connected to the newly laid double track in the portions between Pennadam and Talanallur and from Mathur to Ichchangadu. The final works were expected to be completed in a week, the officials said.

The RVNL is executing the 273-kilometre doubling project from Villupuram to Dindigul via Tiruchi at a cost of Rs. 1,200 crore. Doubling works were carried out simultaneously in various portions in the entire stretch from Villupuram to Dindigul.

The left-over portion in the Villupuram – Tiruchi section under the doubling project was the stretch from Valadi to Golden Rock station. It has reached final stage of completion. Two new bridges have been constructed project across the Cauvery and the Coleroon in Tiruchi. The inspection by the CRS on the double line from Valadi to Golden Rock station was expected to be carried out this month-end. Once this stretch gets commissioned, the entire section from Villupuram to Tiruchi would become a double line which would cut down running time.

Second entry to Tiruchi Junction remains in disuse

Image

The second entry leading to Tiruchi railway junction continues to present an isolated look with no movement of city buses.

This has been the state notwithstanding a joint inspection conducted by top officials of the City Police, Railways and Railway Protection Force a few months ago followed by a meeting. No solution seems to have been found with respect to the second entry with city buses continuing to skip the stretch laid by the railways investing lakhs of rupees.

The road, stretching nearly half-a-km, to the Tiruchi Junction was laid with the objective to ease congestion at the Junction roundabout. City buses coming from Chathram bus stand used to take a left turn to enter the second entry while heading towards the central bus stand.

After dropping passengers at the end of the stretch, the buses used to take a ‘U’ turn to enter Bharathiar Salai again before proceeding to the central bus stand.

Although this system was in vogue for some time, the arrangement came to end gradually.

City buses bound for central bus stand – both government and private - continue to skip the second entry and take the route via station approach road near the Junction roundabout.

The road which has suffered damage presents a deserted look. The rule for city buses to take the stretch is no longer being enforced strictly.

A few months ago, top officials of the City Police, Railways and RPF jointly inspected the road in a bid to arrive at a solution.

However, no concrete solution was arrived at, which is evident from the fact that buses continue to skip the stretch.

The suggestion that buses taking the stretch could go straight to pass in front of the main entrance of the station instead of taking a ‘U’ turn so as to reach the exit near the Junction roundabout does not seem to have been accepted.

It is felt that it may only lead to congestion at the station entrance besides posing hazard to passengers coming out or proceeding towards the station.

A senior railway official said buses proceeding straight would only add to congestion instead of easing it besides causing accidents.

Police sources said they planned to meet the railway officials shortly to thrash out a solution.
