New 3D movie in Planetarium

TIRUCHI: The Anna Science Centre – Planetarium in the city has procured another software on ‘Shark Island', a 3D science movie.

The education facility in the form of 3D science movies at the planetarium has been a source of inspiration since the mini air-conditioned 3D theatre was set up here.

The new software has been procured to make the programme more interesting lively to and attract more boys and girls.

The new 3D science movie will be screened from this week onwards, according to a press release of T. M. Alagiri Swamy Raju, Project Director (in-charge) of the Planetarium.

Planetarium offers new visual treat

TIRUCHI: Are you curious to unravel the mystery behind the formation of planets? Want to find out the first celestial bodies to appear in the sky after sunset? Your quest for exploring the space ends with the launch of ‘one world, one sky' programme by the Anna Science Centre-Planetarium.

The earth was the only life-supporting planet in the universe. And after sunset, planets are the first celestial objects to appear in the sky followed by stars, revealed P.Iyamperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the programme at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai and Anna Science Centre-Planetarium, here on Tuesday.

The programme has been designed to throw light on the concept of exo planets.

He spoke on the features of the solar system with its eight planets, their moons and other heavenly bodies. In the outer solar system, crores of stars are breeding planets known as Extra Solar Planets or Exo Planets.

These planets are constantly finding their way into the Milky Way. These are classified as Hot Jupiter planets, as they are approximately of the same size of Jupiter.

Astronomers had discovered a hot Jupiter-size planet near the star Epsilon Eridani in 2000. Recently, over 400 such planets have been discovered. Mr.Iyamperumal said the number of exo planets was on the rise and astronomers are adopting various techniques to carry out a detailed study on them.

If more than three planets revolved around a star, they were called superior planets. However, he admitted that astronomers were still debating these exo planets.

T. M. Alagiri Swamy Raju, Project Director in-charge of the Anna Science Centre-Planetarium, spoke on various programmes introduced by the centre.

K.Rameshwaran, principal, J.J.College of Engineering and Technology, inaugurated the programme. J. R. Pazhaniswami, Senior Scientific Assistant, Anna Science Centre-Planetarium, spoke.

Watch the summer sky

The Anna Science Centre-Planetarium in Tiruchi has been abuzz with a series of activities for the past few weeks. A large number of students from different parts of the State have been visiting it this summer.

Come summer, the Anna Science Centre-Planetarium organises special programmes targeted at students. No wonder, the campus is vibrant all through the summer. Students from not only the central districts, but also from faraway Erode and Cuddalore visit the Science Centre.

The Planetarium, with its rich infrastructure, kindles the students' interest in astronomy, and has been playing a crucial role in motivating them to night-sky observation besides conducting simple experiments.

The infrastructure includes the 3-D air-conditioned theatre for watching the three-dimensional view of science films, a full-fledged ‘Sky Theatre' for Planetarium programmes, a high-tech science gallery, an environmental and activity gallery, Science Park and other interactive exhibits — Circus of Force; Know Your Weight in Different Planets.

Special summer programmes held this year aimed at motivating students to the latest facets of science and technology.

The summer students' camp for five days exposed the participants to various features of mathematics, science and astronomy.

A painting competition, as part of the observance of Earth Day, motivated a large number of pupils to express their views and suggestions on protecting ecology, resources and environmental wealth.

The National Science Day and the National Technology Day provided adequate opportunities to students from various parts of the State to understand the nuances of the latest developments in science and technology.

Experiment basis

“Students understand more about science during their visit to the Planetarium, as they independently conduct experiments and observe scientific facts and data,” says T.M. Alagiri Swamy Raju, project director, Anna Science Centre – Planetarium.

J.R. Pazhaniswamy, senior scientific assistant, says the screening of a film on planets daily is the special feature at the Planetarium. Currently, a film on “Ancient Astronomy” is being screened.
