The process of setting up of seven IIMs, 374 degree colleges and 10 NITs has been set in motion with the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) approving the proposals in this regard.

The proposals approved by the EFC yesterday will now be sent to the Cabinet for approval, sources in HRD Ministry said.

The government has decided to set up seven IIMs in the states of Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattishgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Haryana.

The existing IIMs have already agreed to provide "all types of support" for setting up of new elite B-Schools in the country.

Here is the full article on IIM.

TO START FUNCTIONING FROM BHEL CAMPUS
IIM-Tiruchi to begin next year

Tiruchi: The Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi will start full fledged functioning from the next academic year in a temporary location, until the infrastructure for the premier institution is created on the 200-acre site provided by the state government.
The IIM-Tiruchi was one among the six institutes sanctioned by the Union ministry of human resource development in March 2008, as part of 11th five-year plan.
A permanent site for the IIM was identified on the premises of Bharathidasan University, close to Anna University-Tiruchi on the Pudukottai Road, 18 kilometres from the fort city. Interestingly, the institute is likely to begin shortterm executive course this year itself.
“We have handed over a 200-acre land to the HRD ministry for developing permanent infrastructure for IIM - Tiruchi. Until full fledged infrastructure is created IIM would function from a temporary site,’’ K Ponmudy, state higher education minister told The Times of India. With Bharathidasan University and Anna University in the vicinity, the sprawling site allotted for the IIM is considered the most suitable for the institution.
The IIM–Tiruchi would commence admission from the next academic year, by which time faculty recruitment would have been completed, said the minister.
Sources in the state higher education ministry, however, said though the regular management courses would commence from next academic year, short-term executive courses in the institute are likely to begin from this year itself. The IIM-Bangalore has been vested with the responsibility of mentoring IIM-Tiruchi.
An administrative centre of the institute would be established at the Magneto Hydro Dynamics department of PSU giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in the suburban Tiruverumbur. A committee comprising representatives from the Union ministry of human resources, IIM- Lucknow and IIMBangalore visited the department to assess the suitability of the building, located close to Bharathidasan Institute of Management.
The team had also visited National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, also at Tiruverumbur on Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway.
“We are ready to extend all kinds of assistance required for IIM Tiruchi,” said NIT director M Chidambaram.

As per the sources from the Trichy Collector office, Collector has inspected BHEL premises for temporary location of IIM. Though the campus would come up near Bharathidasan university , a temporary location is being sorted out to start the course in this academic year.
Already BIM is functioning in this campus, don’t know how feasible it is !!!

IIM to temporarily function from BHEL MHD campus.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) proposed by the Central Government for Tamil Nadu at Tiruchi is likely to get functional from 2009-10.

A temporary building with a few classrooms has been identified in MHD (Magneto Hydro Dynamics) campus on the premises of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), at a short distance from the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM).

The IIM will function here till full-fledged infrastructure is created on the 200-acre permanent site identified on Bharathidasan University premises. Collector T. Soundiah inspected the building recently.

Expressing satisfaction over the facilities, the Collector said the district administration had forwarded the proposal to the Higher Education Secretary for further action. The Ministry of Human Resource Development is keen to accord a functional status to the IIM-Tiruchi at the earliest, it is learnt.

The institute will be among the six new IIMs in the country which has seven IIMs. Though there is no indication on whether admissions will be made at the proposed IIM-Tiruchi during 2009, sources said that the temporary building would begin functioning as an administrative centre. In a year’s time, faculty recruitment is expected, and management development programmes will be conducted.
Mentoring

The IIM-Bangalore has been vested with the responsibility of mentoring IIM-Tiruchi, sources said.

Hi,
As per the member posting "Collector has inspected BHEL premises for temporary location of IIM" is true,
but when i spoke to one of the official in BIM, he was surprise by the collectors visit, it seems they themselves donot have enough space there :o so may be that’s why they have moved to university campus i think.

IIMs agree to help set up 6 new B-schools

Ending a year-long tussle with the government, the Indian Institutes of Management on Wednesday agreed to provide 'all types of support' for setting up six new B-schools in the country which are expected to start functioning from the coming academic session.

At a meeting with higher education secretary R P Agrawal, the IIM directors came on board to extend their expertise in establishing new B-schools.

Earlier, the IIMs had expressed their reservation to the idea of mentoring the new IIMs after which the government set up a committee to evolve a suitable module to start the new IIMs.

The three-member committee, comprising director of IIM Ahmedabad Sameer Barua, IIM Kolkata director Sekhar Chaudhury and IIT Kanpur director S G Dhande, also did not favour the idea of mentoring.

"But in today's meeting, the IIM directors gave positive indications to provide all types of support for setting up of the new IIMs. We expect the new IIMs would start functioning from the coming academic session," a top source, who was present at the meeting, told PTI.

The government has decided to set up six IIMs in the states of Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.

The government had planned that the existing IIMs would mentor the new IIMs in the same fashion as the old Indian Institutes of Technology mentored the new ones last year.

The government's logic was that if the new IIMs are started as separate entities, they will have to engage separate architects for designing the building and other structures. But if they are mentored by the existing IIMs, there will be better coordination when the campus is being designed thereby cutting costs and enabling better planning.

Besides, the existing faculty could take care of additional load in managing the new IIMs till the new institutes get their own faculty.

The IIM-Review Committee, headed by R C Bhargava, had also said that the old institutes should mentor the new ones.

The committee had said that the new IIMs should be under the control of the existing IIMs initially, which could help them learn from the experience of the old institutes in shaping their future. The recommendations are being considered by the government.

Creation of campus, facilities and faculty also came up for discussion at the meeting.

Meanwhile, some progress has been made in setting up of the IIMs in the states of Haryana and Tamil Nadu where the government has identified the buildings for operation of the B-schools.

The proposed IIM at Rohtak will temporarily function in a building constructed by the Haryana government for setting up a polytechnic.

Similarly, the proposed institute at Trichy will function at the building of the Bharathidhasan University there.
