NIT unable to spare space for IIM-Tiruchi

Management Likely To Accept BHEL Support

Tiruchi: Plans for getting the Indian Institute of Management-Tiruchi (IIM-T) off the ground from the next academic year have hit a roadblock, with the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NITT) turning down the management institute’s request to provide temporary classroom infrastructure for a couple of years before it can get its own permanent buildings.
NIT-Tiruchi, also a central institute functioning under the HRD ministry, located 20 km from Tiruchi city at Tiruverumbur, received a formal communication seeking classrooms and hostel facilities for two years from 2010-11, but NIT has replied that the institute could not provide classrooms due to paucity of infrastructure. However, it is ready to provide hostel facilities.

“NIT itself is in need of more classroom infrastructure. But, we can provide hostel facilities to the students of the IIM,” said NIT director M Chidambaram said.

Though initially inclined towards extending infrastructural support to the IIM, NIT had to refuse after it learnt that management institute needed six classrooms. Moreover, there was an increase in the student strength of NIT following the HRD ministry’s directive on reservation for OBC students. By admitting 850 candidates for its nine BTech programmes and the BArch programme this year, NIT has filled the 27 % OBC quota specified by the ministry. Student intake has been enhanced accordingly for the 23 postgraduate programmes as well.

With NIT being ruled out as a temporary campus, IIM in all likelihood would opt for the infrastructure support from PSU giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, also located at Tiruverumbur. In fact, a committee had visited the magneto-hydrodynamics department of BHEL, scouting for temporary accommodation before it sent a request was made to NIT. The committee comprising representatives from IIM, Lucknow, IIM Bangalore and the Union HRD ministry, however, found NIT more suitable.

The public sector giant is expected to be the next preferred spot for the premier institute’s temporary campus until buildings are raised in the permanent site for the IIM identified in the premises of Bharathidasan University, also close to Anna University-Tiruchi on Pudukottai road.

State higher education secretary K Ganesan said the state government has transferred 200 acres of land at the site for IIM.
“As far as the state government is concerned, we are ready to provide all support for the IIM,” he said.

HRD begins hunt for directors of new IIMs

MUMBAI: It’s now the turn of India’s top management schools to expand their club. The ministry of human resource development called for applications on Tuesday to fill up the positions of four directors for IIMs at Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rohtak (Haryana), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu).

With the Central government clearing the new payscales for centrally funded technical institutes for IITs and IIMs, the ministry will now pay all the directors a monthly salary of Rs 80,000. The XIth Five-Year Plan assured IIMs to Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya. The IIM in Shillong started last year. And four new IIMs can start classes from 2010. ‘‘The announcement appointing directors of two more IIMs will come later in the year once the Centre and the respective states zero in on the land for setting up the campus,’’ an official said.

Earlier this year, the HRD ministry asked directors of the old IIMs to mentor the new institutes but they refused initially. Later a committee appointed by the Centre, too, recommended that the old IIMs extend their support to establish the new management colleges. Now the directors have agreed.
