Two more arms of Junction Grade Separator cum ROB likely to be opened by Pongal

Quote:
Defence Ministry’s nod for giving its land for the multi-level road over bridge is expected soon

While the Highways Department is expecting in-principle approval from the Ministry of Defence to give its land for the multi-level road over bridge coming up near the Railway Junction in the city, it is now working towards opening two more arms of the bridge by Pongal.

The project, taken up by the Railways and the Highways Department, is being executed in two stages by reconstructing the narrow road over the bridge across the railway lines near the Tiruchi Junction on the Madurai Road intersection.

In the first stage, a new three-lane road-over-bridge with six arms is being be built at a cost of ₹44.28 crore adjacent to the existing bridge. In the next stage, the old bridge will be dismantled and a new bridge with two arms built in its place.

The first stage of the new flyover was scheduled to be completed by February 2017 and the second stage by 2019. However, delays in land transfer and acquisition have pegged back the construction work.

According to sources in the Highways Department, nearly 85% of the first stage of the project has been completed now and currently work was under way in full swing on the constructions of the arms towards Madurai Road (Crawford road) and the Central Bus Stand.

Work on the Madurai arm has almost been completed.

The two arms are expected to be completed within a month or so. Sources indicated that the Highways Department was working towards opening the two arms for traffic by Pongal. The Dindigul Highway-Railway Junction arm for traffic in March 2016.

The approach ramp on the Chennai arm is pending completion for the last two years, as the Ministry of Defence was yet to give approval for transfer of about 0.26855 hectares of its land for the project.

Sources indicated that they were expecting in-principle nod for the land transfer from the Defence Ministry any time now as the proposal has reached the final stages of approval. Tiruchi MP P. Kumar had also met Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently urging her to grant in principle approval at the earliest.

Sources said once the Highways Department gets access to the Defence land, the remaining portion of the first stage of the work could be completed within two months.

Once the first stage of the bridge is fully complete to cater to traffic, work on the second stage of the bridge would commence, the sources said.

Trichy MP Mr. Kumar meets Union Defence Minister to resolve the Deadlock of Mannarpuram Arm LA issue

Image
Tiruchi MP P. Kumar handing over a memorandum to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Monday

Quote:
Mr. Kumar also presented another memorandum to the Defence Minister, appealing for transfer of defence land to the extent of 0.26855 hectares for reconstruction of a road overbridge near Tiruchi railway junction in lieu of the existing old bridge.

The memorandum said 85 per cent of reconstruction was completed except the approach ramp on the Chennai arm, which was pending for the last two years due to lack of ‘in-principle’ approval for transfer of the defence land.

While the Dindigul arm of the road over bridge was completed and opened for traffic, the Madurai arm would be opened in a few months. But the work on the Chennai arm was pending. Mr. Kumar said he had met the Defence Secretary and previous defence ministers for the last two years.
